Tired of listening to gay rumors about himself, Zac Efron has hit back at the media for creating stories and says he doesn’t understand why they make being gay sound like a negative thing. He also admits that he never lives in fear of rumors or any backlash from his career:
“I don’t like to live in fear about things like rumors and backlash to begin with — that’s the way I was raised — but I just can’t see what’s so wrong about being gay.”
On perhaps playing a gay role someday, Zac says he wouldn’t take on the part simply because he would be challenged to play a gay man, but because he looks for parts that will push him and be a risk for his career. He does believe this will be something he’ll take on in the future because it would be “unexplored territory” and that excites him:
“I’d never take a role just for the sake of playing gay, but I’m always looking for a role that’s challenging, different, and entails some risk, so there’s no doubt in my mind that one of those characters will be gay at some point in the future. It’s always interesting to delve into unexplored territory, and that would be a new avenue for me. I definitely wouldn’t be afraid.”
Talking about marriage equality, Zac believes it’s an important issue that continues to affect people all over the world and even people close to him who he hopes can be happy and he wishes that they’ll be able to live how they want to:
“It’s an issue that affects so many people in my life — a lot of my close friends and some of the most influential people around me. I just want them all to be happy. It would make me so happy to see them able to live their lives and do what they want to do.”
