Hold onto your bolters, Warhammer 40K fans! An unfinished build of Space Marine 2 has leaked online ahead of its official release, raising a cheer from some and a grimace from developers.
Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 Leaked Early, Fans Get Early Access, Devs Scramble
This 75GB behemoth, believed to be an older version of the game, is making the rounds on torrent sites after surfacing on 4chan. While some content is missing and placeholder art is present, gamers can reportedly dive into the entire campaign, test out the new co-op Operations mode, and even battle friends in local PvP (minus AI companions). The source of the leak remains a mystery for now.
Publisher Focus Entertainment took to social media to express their dismay. “It’s disheartening,” they said, “that many of the surprises we worked to keep secret were spoiled.”
Not taking the leak lying down, Focus Entertainment and developer Saber Interactive are aggressively purging leaked gameplay footage from YouTube, claiming copyright infringement. Some channels have even been caught in the crossfire and removed entirely.
The leaked build is suspected to be from June 20th and might have been intended for the scrapped Space Marine 2 open beta. Regardless, this incident highlights a growing trend of leaks in the gaming industry.
Just last year, Grand Theft Auto 6 suffered a major leak of development materials. In 2023, it was Nintendo’s turn when retailers accidentally shipped The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom early, leading to a digital download frenzy.
While these leaks undoubtedly affect everyone involved with the games, they seem to be a recurring issue with no easy solution. Will this be enough to deter future leaks? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: Space Marine 2 fans with strong internet connections just got a surprise early access campaign.
