Vanessa Bauer has opened up about her secret romance with Joey Essex, which they kept under wraps during the fall season of Dancing on Ice.
The figure skater eventually addressed the rumors, claiming she is “happier than ever” with the former reality TV star.
During the show last fall, Vanessa, then 26, and Joey, then 33, hit it off and ended up in second place.
Throughout the competition, the couple played discreet about their relationship status.
Vanessa boasted, “Me and Joey, we’re doing very good – we are doing really good at the moment” when asked about her relationship with Joey.
When asked how she felt about her romantic life, Vanessa said, “I’m very happy.”
The skater went on to applaud his perseverance and commitment to the series.
She told The Sun, “Joey is a very serious guy behind closed doors, he worked so hard – it’s been an incredible series.”
“We were close to winning but it was never about winning, we won anyway.”
As viewers noticed the two had connection during the first week of Dancing on Ice, rumors of a romance quickly spread among viewers.
Their tight friendship was clear on their individual social media profiles, and they’ve even been asked about their “romance” by broadcasters Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield.
Joey complimented his coach by saying she was the best and talked about how strong their friendship was during the championship game.
“She’s the best.” He went on to say “I couldn’t be anymore proud of myself and of her.”
It follows Joey’s comments to The Mirror that the two have gotten along great from the start.
“Me and Vanessa have a great bond, we’ve always gotten on well with each other since day one,” he remarked.
Because “it’s very special and I think it would be quite nice to see what’s going on in the outside because we’re just mainly in the ice rink to be honest.”
He continued, “At the start of the journey, I was like oh my gosh I don’t want to drop you but now it’s just like whatever let’s do it, let’s take risks! Obviously I care about Vanessa because she’s a lovely girl.
“I don’t want to drop her, but she’s so used to being dropped. Nile’s a gymnast so he knows how to fall and I know how to fall now. I got some injuries at the start but you learn how to fall and you learn how to be dropped.”
