Unseen Scarlet & Violet Pokemon were leaked at the Pokemon San Diego 2023 Regional Championships

During one of the livestreams of the Pokemon San Diego 2023 Regional Championships event, we appeared to see new entries in the Pokedex that had not previously appeared in any game.

From the image, we can see six Pokemon sprites, including Kabuto, Garbador, Vanillish, and Volbeat. These four Pokemon are bookended by two others, both of which have never been seen before in the Pokemon franchise.

The appearance of the two previously unseen and unannounced Pokemon immediately sparked discussion among fans, with many expecting them to be included in future DLC for the new games.

“Either that or they’re from the DLC already in development,” one tweet responded. “That’s also a possibility,” the OP said, “but if I say that in the original tweet, some accounts (and YouTubers) will misconstrue my words and say that these are confirmed to return in DLC.”

Are Fossil Pokemon on the way?

It’s difficult to say if these are genuine leaks and if the Fossil Pokemon will actually be making a comeback given that Pokemon esports competitions like the Regionals frequently use custom selectors and displays for team previews. The most likely explanation is that each of the 1,008 Pokemon has or will get a new menu sprite for use in a game like Pokemon Home, which is still slated for Scarlet and Violet’s release.

The more exciting possibility is that Fossils will make their debut in Paldea, but confirmation of that is still a long way off.
