The Game Awards is an annual awards ceremony that honors achievements in the video game industry. Established in 2014, the shows are produced and hosted by gaming journalist Geoff Keighley, who worked on his predecessor, the Spike Video Game Awards, for over ten years.
The Game Awards in 2022 will take place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on December 8, and in addition to some in-person tickets becoming available in the fall, it will be streamable on YouTube, TikTok, Twitch, Twitter, and Facebook.
New to The Game Awards in 2022 is Best Adaptation, a category that will recognize creative work that authentically adapts video game intellectual property into other popular media, including but not limited to theatrical films, podcasts, streaming shows, comics and novels .
“The Best Adaptation Award is a way for the gaming industry and its fans to tip its hat to creative work that authentically adapts and often adds lore and context to our favorite gaming franchises,” said The Game Awards’ creator and executive producer, Geoff Keighley. “With so many game-inspired projects across entertainment, the time is right to honor excellence in adapting video game worlds to other mediums.”
It’s not entirely clear what motivated the new category, but its extremely broad umbrella seems to indicate that it’s just a reflection of how many video games are being adapted into other things. We’d also bet that having a category related to movies and TV would give The Game Awards a little more traction in those industries, making it easier for Keighley to get trailers for things like The Next Super Mario Movie or HBO’s The Last Of Us or Sonic The Hedgehog 3 .
