The Chicago Cubs are in the midst of a rebuild and they are still looking to add some key pieces through free agency.
The Chicago Cubs are attempting to sign Dansby Swanson?
The signing of former NL MVP Cody Bellinger is a good start, and it appears they’re also looking for a star shortstop.
According to Ken Rosenthal of the Atlanta Braves, the organization believes SS If they don’t go all-in on Carlos Correa, their most “realistic” target is Dansby Swanson.
Swanson has been a standout for the Braves since his debut in 2016. Last year, the former first-round pick hit. 277 hits, 25 home runs, and 96 RBI in 162 games for Atlanta.
Swanson, who is attracting a lot of interest from other teams, has yet to meet with the Cubs. The Braves are still interested in retaining him.
Chicago reportedly met with Correa and his agent Scott Boras earlier this week in San Diego and appears to be interested in him. You’d think Jed Hoyer and the front office would go after one or the other, but could they go after both?
I mean, it’s not completely implausible. Last winter, the Texas Rangers did just that, inking two massive contracts for shortstops Corey Seager and Marcus Semien. The latter was assigned to second base. The Ricketts ownership family appears to have given Hoyer complete freedom to spend as much as he needs to get the Cubs back into contention as soon as possible. Bringing in Correa and Swanson would be a huge step in the right direction.
