Scarlett Johansson has revealed that she auditioned for the part of ‘Fantine’ for the recent film ‘Les Miserables’ but says she ruined her chances by auditioning with laryngitis. She says that although she struggled against the sickness there was nothing she could do about it but she still sang her heart out and did her best. Looking back on it now, she thinks it’s fate because Anne was so perfect for the role and it was “meant to be” according to her:

“Yes, I did (audition for Fantine). I sang my little heart out… The jazz hands kid inside me was just over the moon! (But) I auditioned with laryngitis. I did everything I could to, like, not have laryngitis. Looking at the film now, there’s no possible way I ever could have topped that performance (by Hathaway). It was perfect and I think fateful and meant to be.”

Auditioning for director Tom Hooper brought back memories for Scarlett because she once also tried out for the part of Fantine’s daughter Cosette to appear on the Broadway show:

“The audition itself (for Hooper) brought back so many memories of auditioning for Les Mis for the young Cosette, and it was fun for me to revisit that.”
