70-year-old actor Robert De Niro has opened up on playing older roles. Robert admits it’s just “life” and he is fine with playing new parts and realizes he is no longer the romantic interest anymore, saying those days are long behind him. Robert jokes that he hopes technology can turn back time when it comes to his looks and he’ll be able to go on for an even longer period:
”That’s just life. We can’t play certain parts any more. We’re playing the father or the grandfather or the great-grandfather and that can be written in a funny way, so it’s fine. But you’re not carrying the movie as the young romantic lead – those days are gone. I’m hoping that if things work out with digital technology, they can finally make us look younger and I can go on for another 40 years.”
De Niro, who stars in new film ‘Last Vegas’ alongside other established actors Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline, admits that he doesn’t get to see enough films in the cinema anymore but he believes there are still older people who want to have the full cinematic experience and he hopes they will enjoy the new film which centers around the older cast. He thinks people will hopefully identify:
”I don’t go to see enough films. But I’m told that since baby-boomers will still actually go to see a movie in a theatre – because it’s a communal experience that our generation is used to – there’s now a trend towards making some movies that those people could possibly identify themselves in.”
