RE4 Remake quick-time events

Capcom has revealed that the upcoming remake of RE4 will remove quick-time events and replace them with sidequests.

RE4 Remake removes quick-time events and adds sidequests

The removal of quick-time events is perhaps the most significant change. They were abundant in the original Resident Evil 4. Some were entertaining. Others were punished for laying down the controller while watching a cutscene. Breakable knives, first seen in the Resident Evil 2 remake, return to replace Leon’s permanent one from the original. Meanwhile, the new sidequests will take the form of blue flyers that you can collect and will assign you tasks such as solving puzzles or eliminating an enemy. There will also be new enemy types.

Another significant change is that Ashley Graham no longer has a health bar. No more debating whether to use your yellow herb for your or her health! She will, however, enter a “downed state” if she sustains too much damage. If you do not revive her, she will die, and the game will be over. Capcom wants Ashley to “feel more like a natural companion,” which means she can help you open locked doors in a crawlspace.

Most of these changes are acceptable to me. The quick-time events were only really fun on the Wii version of Resident Evil 4, so losing them for the remake isn’t such a big deal, though I’m curious how the first Krauser cutscene will play out. Sidequests are also a welcome addition. Leon’s permanent knife is the only thing I’ll miss. It was always useful to finish off downed enemies, but I suppose the breakable knives will make the game more difficult.
