How to beat

This is basically a timed battle. Your entire team will be reduced to 1 HP once you reach the point of Great Calamity, the Deep One’s signature move. The Deep One also gets faster as the fight progresses, and will almost certainly follow up with a second and third attack. It makes no difference how many Rise Again you have at that point.

Fortunately, there is a quick way to end this fight.

  • Armsmaster (Hikari). Equip A Step Ahead (Inventor), Boost-Start (Merchant), and Support Skill Deal More Damage (Armsmaster). Hikari must also know the Learned Skills Drive Back and Last Gasp.
  • Inventor. Equip A Step Ahead (Inventor) and Support Skill Boost-Start (Merchant),
  • Scholar (Temenos): Equip A Step Ahead (Inventor) and Support Skill Boost-Start (Merchant).
  • Warrior (Throne). Equip A Step Ahead (Inventor), Peak Performance (Armsmaster), Support Skill Boost-Start (Merchant) and Deal More Damage (Armsmaster).

You can use accessories to increase your speed and attack. Finisher’s Claw on Hikari or Throne is another option.

Our objective is to break the Deep One in the first round. Then we’ll beat him in the second round.

Set the time to night and include Temenos in your party to receive the Blessing of Darkness. The order of the first round is unimportant, so don’t worry about it.

Round 1

First, allow your Inventor to use Critical Scope for four turns to convert all damage dealt to a single foe to critical damage.

For Warrior Throne, use her Latent Ability and Aggressive Slash. This will break three of the shields protecting the Deep One. Again, use Aggressive Slash. Don’t call her BP.

Then, use Armsmaster Hikari’s Drive Back to move the Deep One’s turn to the back of the line. Do not use his BP. This will keep the Deep One from destroying our setup, but it may not be necessary if you have a high-level team.

Finally, Temenos must employ his latent ability and Elemental Barrage. If you’re lucky, this will break the Deep One’s final four shields. It’s possible that it’ll only hit three times. If that’s the case, you’ll need to break him during the next unit’s turn. Again, do not use BP.

Round 2

After you’ve broken the Deep One, use all of Throne’s BP to cast Aeber’s Reckoning. The Inventor’s move isn’t as important; just aim for the most damage possible.

What is important is Hikari’s next move: Last Gasp. It will unleash a devastating sword attack on a single foe. The lower you r HP, the stronger the attack. And since Hikari has only one HP, well, imagine the damage you can inflict. It should be enough to defeat the Deep One, especially if Aeber’s Reckoning was used beforehand. However, as long as you dealt at least 100,000 total damage, you should be able to bring the Deep One down before he enters his Calamities.

That concludes our guide on how to defeat the Deep One in Octopath Traveler 2.
