Unravel the mysteries of the Fae Realms in Nightingale with the power of Realm Cards, your key to unlocking diverse and ever-changing worlds. This guide will equip you with the knowledge to craft, utilize, and manipulate these cards to become a true Realmwaker.
What are Realm Cards in Nightingale?
Think of them as portals to procedurally generated adventures. Each card imbues the portal with specific traits, shaping the landscape, creatures, and challenges you encounter.
Types of Realm Cards:
- Biome Cards: The foundation of your portal, defining the basic environment (desert, forest, etc.). You’ll need at least one Biome Card to activate the portal.
- Major Cards: These potent cards significantly alter the Realm’s characteristics, impacting enemy types, climate, loot, and more. Up to two Major Cards can be used per portal.
- Minor Cards: Add subtle tweaks to the Realm, further customizing your experience. You can slot in two Minor Cards alongside your Major Cards.
How to Craft
Paper & Ink: The Foundation of Realm Crafting
Before diving into the enchanting world of crafting, stock up on two key ingredients: Paper and Ink. Both are readily available at your local Essence Trader. Purchase the Saw Mill (55 Essence Dust) for Paper and the Mortar Station (55 Essence Dust) for Ink (Alchemical Ink, to be specific). Additionally, grab the Enchanter’s Focus and any other Refinement and Simple facilities while you’re there!. These workstations will be your tools for crafting.
- Crafting Paper: Paper is a breeze! Head to the Saw Mill and toss in 2 Wood Bundles. Each crafting session yields 12 Paper, enough for several Realm Cards.
- Crafting Alchemical Ink:
-
- 1x Refined Pigment: Gather Mushrooms, Berries, or Flowers (any kind will do!). Toss two of them into the Mortar Station to create one unit of Refined Pigment.
- 1x Glass: Explore rocky outcrops for sparkling Geodes containing Quartz (they look like crystal rock deposits). Smash them with your Pickaxe to gather Gems. Two Gems in the Smelter will yield one unit of Glass.
- Ink (Alchemical Ink): Combine your Refined Pigment and Glass in the Mortar Station. Each batch produces 12 doses of potent ink.
Crafting Realm Cards
With Paper and Ink in hand, head to the Enchanter’s Focus. Here, you can combine them with Essence Dust (extract Plant Fibre, Sticks, or Stones from your inventory if you’re low) to create various Realm Cards:
- Major Realm Cards: Access diverse Realms with unique landscapes and challenges.
- Minor Realm Cards: Modify your current Realm with buffs or debuffs.
- Biome Cards: Enter specific Biome Realms like the Swamp, Desert, or Forest.
The game doesn’t explicitly label card types. Use your detective skills! If a card has an effect, it’s a Minor Realm Card. The only Biome Cards are Swamp, Desert, and Forest, leaving the rest as Major Realm Cards.

How to Use
Using Realm Cards is a straightforward yet pivotal aspect of gameplay in Nightingale. Players must approach the Arcane Portal Device within their Respite Realms and interact with it to select the desired combination of Realm Cards. Once configured, the portal will open, granting access to a procedurally generated realm filled with untold wonders and dangers.
It’s important to note that while each realm contains at least one portal location, the exact layout and contents of the realms are randomized, adding an element of unpredictability to each expedition.
With this knowledge in hand, you’re ready to unlock the boundless potential of Nightingale‘s Realm Cards. Go forth, Realmwaker, and forge your own path through the ever-shifting Fae Realms!
