They have apparently taken their time in their search and are still considering one notable former NFL head coach.
Matt Rhule is being considered for the job, according to Husker Online. According to Mitch Sherman of The Athletic, Rhule “remains a serious candidate” for Nebraska.
The Carolina Panthers fired Rhule after a 1-4 start to the season. In his two seasons as Carolina’s head coach, he went 11-27.
Rhule excelled in college, first at Temple and then at Baylor. Rhule finished his four-year tenure at Temple with back-to-back 10-win seasons.
He also resurrected the Baylor program after it had been buried as a result of the university’s scandal.
Rhule improved the Bears from 1-11 to 11-3 in his third season, making him a popular candidate for other jobs. He eventually left for the NFL.
Rhule signed a seven-year, $62 million contract with the Panthers and is still owed the full amount.
Given what he is owed, negotiating a buyout and contract for his next job could be difficult.
But perhaps Rhule is ready to return to coaching and is looking forward to the challenge of coaching the Huskers.
