One of the most pressing questions in the fighting game community right now is when we will see Mortal Kombat 12. We’d be lying if we said it was coming out soon. Though this topic has not been officially addressed, recent rumors indicate that it is something worth discussing. In this article, we’ll go over everything you need to know about Mortal Kombat 12, including its release date, leaks, story, and much more.
Mortal Kombat 12 Release Date
On November 13, NetherRealm Creative Officer Ed Boon took to Twitter and teased fans with information about upcoming games. In a tweet, he directly confirmed the existence of Injustice 3 and Mortal Kombat 12.
Is the next game a sequel?

NetherRealm has not yet officially stated a release date. Given the leaks and the fact that the Studio hasn’t released a new game in over three years, we expect Mortal Kombat 12 to be revealed in 2022, followed by a Q4 2023 release.
The development cycle at many studios has been challenging in recent years due to COVID-19 and other factors, but now that some semblance of normalcy has been restored, we anticipate a release date announcement very soon.
Mortal Kombat 12 Leaks
Mortal Kombat 12 was not confirmed, but there were several notable announcements. The first is that a new Tekken game is in the works.
You might or might not be aware of one important detail about Mortal Kombat 12. The NetherRealm production manager tweeted a fascinating image at the start of 2022.
A file with the name “MK12 Mast” was visible on the monitor to fans with keen eyes (and quick-save buttons). Those who enlarged and zoomed in on the picture could also make out a portion of an email that says, “our fans eagerly scrape the internet for any trace… Take extra precautions with this material.”
The MK12 file confirms our suspicions that this is for a new IP or Injustice 3. So, regardless of what Ed Boon says, Mortal Kombat 12 appears to be in the works.
What Will Mortal Kombat 12 Be About?
In relation to the question of what the game might be about? There are two outcomes depending on how Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath is ended.
The first is that after defeating Shang Tsung, Lord Liu Kang is able to use Kronika’s Hourglass to change history, which he refers to as his “New Era,” in which he hopes none of his friends are “lost.” If the timeline has been reset, Mortal Kombat 12 could usher in a completely new era of Mortal Kombat. And it could happen hundreds of years before the events of the first Mortal Kombat arcade game. The other possibility is that Shang Tsung took control of reality.
Either one would make for a fantastic story. So, no matter which path NetherRealm Studios chooses, the fans will be there to support them.
Mortal Kombat 12 Possible Characters
It’s nearly impossible to say which characters will appear in Mortal Kombat 12.
Many characters from the end of MK 11 are likely to return in some form in the new game. This is based on Lord Liu Kang’s statement at the end of MK 11 that his friends “are not gone” and will “live again.”
It’s always thrilling to play Scorpion, Liu Kang, and Sub Zero, but it’s fun to change things up every now and then. It was incredible to see characters like Rambo, The Joker, The Terminator, and Spawn appear in Mortal Kombat 11. It was even more fun to play as them.
However, you never know what NetherRealm will create next. They own the rights to the Injustice franchise, so you can expect to see a lot more of DC.
