Laura Whitmore, the show’s former host, announced her departure in August, telling fans the decision was extremely “difficult.”
On Sunday, Maya Jama took to Instagram to share a photo from her personal training session in preparation for her first season as the new Love Island host.
Warren Whitely, her personal trainer who is preparing her for her Love Island debut next year, first shared the candid photo.
“I GOT A MESSAGE,” he wrote alongside an island emoji to his fans. “Love Island, your new host is in shape and ready.”
Maya, who shared the photo on her own Instagram, can be seen flexing her bicep while dressed in all-black athletic gear.
Maya announced her takeover in a cheeky Instagram video featuring an iconic Love Island water bottle with her own name on it.
“Okay, the rumors are true,” the post was captioned. “Say hey to your brand-new #LoveIsland host @mayajama!”
Laura responded to the video by writing: “Yes girl!! So delighted for you! You’re gonna be fab”, then there’s a heart emoji.
Maya added in an official statement: “I’ve always been such a massive Love Island fan and I’m so excited to be hosting one of the nation’s favorite shows! I can’t wait to get into the Villa to meet all of the Islanders.”
Paul Mortimer, ITV Reality Programming and Acquisitions Director and Controller, added: “Finding a new host to follow the wonderful Laura Whitmore was never going to be easy. In Maya Jama though, we have another high profile fan of the show who’ll be a great addition to the Love Island family.”
Former winner Ekin-Su Cülcülolu, who is still with her on-screen boyfriend Davide Sanclimenti, claimed she was offered the hosting gig, which caused an awkward moment.
“I did get offered. I would’ve loved to do it, but I can’t at the minute because of how busy I am,” PopSugar spoke with the Dancing on Ice hopeful.
“And I said I’m not ready for it . . . I want proper training. I’ve done presenting before, but not to the level of Laura [Whitmore].”
A source told OK later, with Maya liking a similar story on Twitter: “Maya was the first choice for host,”
