Akers was officially ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers by the Rams on Friday due to “personal reasons.”
Los Angeles Rams are finding the replacement for Cam Akers, and have three trade options: Christian McCaffrey, David Montgomery, Antonio Gibson
The Rams announced on Friday that Akers would miss Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers due to “personal reasons.”
The move was unexpected, but it is not uncommon for a player to miss a game for reasons that they and the team do not want the public to know.
However, head coach Sean McVay’s comments following the news suggested that the 2020 second-round pick and the team were not on good terms.
The Rams’ running game has been abysmal this season, ranking dead last in the NFL with an average of 62.4 yards per game.
McVay admitted in his press conference on Friday that the Rams’ running game woes aren’t entirely Akers’ fault. However, if the team continues to use him every week, nothing will change.
If things have deteriorated to the point where Akers is traded or cut, Los Angeles must address their running back issues immediately if they are to at least remain in contention for the division title, let alone repeat as Super Bowl champions.
Three possible replacements for Cam Akers
- Christian McCaffrey, Carolina Panthers
The Panthers are said to be open to trades over the next month following the firing of head coach Matt Rhule.
While it has been suggested that Christian McCaffrey is unlikely to be traded, the Panthers should recognize this if the Rams make them an unbeatable offer.
- David Montgomery, Chicago Bears
Khalil Herbert has performed admirably as a fill-in for David Montgomery this season. That, combined with the fact that the Chicago Bears’ third-round pick in 2019 is set to become a free agent, is more than enough reason for the team to begin discussing trades.
Montgomery is clearly not the same player as McCaffrey, but he could certainly improve under McVay and at a much lower cost.
- Antonio Gibson, Washington Commanders
Antonio Gibson, last season’s starter, is expendable, with Brian Robinson returning to the field and taking over as starter for the Washington Commanders in Week 6.
