Here’s everything we know about Hogwarts Legacy, a new Harry Potter game coming in the next few months, including release date, gameplay, platforms, and more.
Hogwarts Legacy release date and platforms
PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC will get Hogwarts Legacy on February 10, 2023. Nintendo Switch will get the game on July 25, 2023, while PS4 and Xbox One will get it on April 4, 2023.
Multiplayer
According to the game’s marketing, Hogwarts Legacy will be a single-player adventure. In a lengthy FAQ, Warner Bros. has officially ruled out the possibility of a multiplayer component.
Gameplay
Hogwarts Legacy is an open-world action role-playing game in which you attend the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. You’ll be assigned to one of the four houses (Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin) and will be able to attend classes to hone your magical abilities. Players will be able to switch between Hogwarts houses at any time, though Warner Bros. has not revealed how this will work.
The entire game, including the titular school, Hogsmeade, the Forbidden Forest, and the Overland area, will be open-world. As a student, you will learn new spells, grow plants, befriend mythical beasts, and form bonds with your classmates.
Another known fact is that the game will take place in the 1800s, long before the birth of Harry Potter in the late 1900s. This isn’t to say we won’t see a flash-forward reference to Potter, but don’t expect to play as him in Hogwarts Legacy.
Trolls, Dark Wizards, and Goblins are just some of the enemies you’ll face in this series. There is mention of a primary villain, but nobody knows who they are. All we know is that they pose a grave danger to the magical community as a whole.
Hogwarts Legacy’s combat system will be similar to that of other fast-paced action games. However, instead of using melee weapons, you’ll rely on spells to levitate enemies, manipulate objects around you, deal fire damage, and otherwise ensure your survival. It appears that combining spells will play a significant role in battle, adding a sense of rapid-fire intensity to the action.
Aside from that, you’ll have a plethora of abilities to apply to your character, ranging from stealth-oriented abilities to various combat techniques and collectibles to discover. There’s even a looting mechanic that involves finding various items to improve your witch/wizard, giving it the feel of a fantasy RPG.
