Singer Ellie Goulding, who recently released a MAC collaboration collection, has revealed that when she was in university, she used lipstick on different parts of her face because she couldn’t afford any other makeup. She only had lipstick and mascara to create her beauty look at the time and would be inventive with her use of the products:
“When I was at university and couldn’t afford any makeup, I just had mascara and lipstick. I would use the lipstick on my mouth, cheeks, and eyes—but I obviously hadn’t discovered a lot yet.”
Ellie explains that when she started out in the music industry she wasn’t sure about beauty or her personal style. She says it has taken her a while to figure out her own look and at the beginning she thought she had to have a certain look to get ahead:
“It’s taken time to see what works for me. When I first started in music, I didn’t have a clue. I was hard on myself for not knowing what to wear or what kind of makeup I wanted. I was still very naïve and thought I had to look a certain way to be noticed.”
She has become more confident in herself in recent years and now even feels as though she doesn’t need to wear makeup every time she steps out:
“This sounds like a cliché, but I really have discovered the power of confidence. My face hasn’t changed, but I look different in photos now because I’m happy. I have a bit more acceptance and love for myself, and that’s really helped. A couple of weeks ago, my boyfriend and I went out to dinner, and I didn’t wear makeup. I didn’t feel insecure, which is interesting because that wouldn’t have been the case when I was younger.”
