Derwin James missed the Dolphins game due to a quad injury, but the injury did not appear to be serious.
With Derwin James out, the team is dealing with a major injury
UPDATE: James did not take part in Thursday’s practice.
James missed the Dolphins’ Week 14 victory due to a quad injury that appeared out of nowhere. Many fans were not concerned because the injury did not appear to be serious.
However, it appears that James’ injury is more serious than the team is indicating. On Thursday, The OC Register’s beat reporter Elliott Teaford provided a bleak update on Derwin’s injury, which could have far-reaching consequences.

According to Elliott Teaford (@ElliottTeaford) December 15, 2022: “Derwin James Jr. isn’t practicing today with the Chargers because of a quadriceps injury that’s believed to be a tear rather than a simple bruise. Joey Bosa was not present for the portion of practice open to reporters. Still no timetable for his return to practice.”
If Derwin James’ injury is a torn quad, this is a bad sign for the Chargers.
There has been no official confirmation that Derwin James has a torn quad, so the team could still avoid the injury. However, if this is the injury that James has, it will be a disaster for the Chargers and how they have identified injuries thus far.
This would almost certainly end Derwin James’ season and could even delay his preparations for the 2023 season. Regardless of the severity of James’ injury, the Los Angeles Chargers must proceed with extreme caution. Rushing him back before he is ready would be the worst thing you could do.
The team is still in the hunt for the playoffs, but a bad decision like this would risk losing James for much longer. Both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams missed multiple weeks following their initial returns, which aggravated their injuries. The last thing this team needs is that to happen to Derwin James.
