The Oscar-winning actress will portray legendary opera singer Maria Callas, it was revealed on Friday.
After learning that she would play the lead in the movie about legendary opera singer Maria Callas, Angelina Jolie made the announcement: “I will give all I can to meet the challenge.”
The Princess Diana biography Spencer, starring Kristen Stewart, was well received by critics. Now, Chilean director Pablo Larran has cast another A-lister in Maria, his upcoming biographical drama. Known opera soprano Maria Callas will be portrayed by Oscar winner Angelina Jolie, according to Deadline.
“Having the chance to combine my two most deep and personal passions, cinema and opera, has been a long-awaited dream,” Larraín said in a statement. “To do this with Angelina, a supremely brave and curious artist, is a fascinating opportunity. A true gift.”
Pablo Larran (Jackie, Spencer) will helm Maria, which Steven Knight, the writer of Peaky Blinders, wrote the screenplay for. The movie is anticipated to follow renowned opera soprano during her dying days in 1970s Paris in order to depict her turbulent, gorgeous, and heartbreaking narrative.
“I take very seriously the responsibility to Maria’s life and legacy. I will give all I can to meet the challenge,” said Jolie. “Pablo Larraín is a director I have long admired. To be allowed the chance to tell more of Maria’s story with him, and with a script by Steven Knight, is a dream.”
Juan de Dios Larran of Fablua Pictures, Lorenzo Mieli of The Apartment Pictures, and Jonas Dornbach of Komlizen Film will produce Maria.
This is Jolie’s first acting role since she starred in the 2021 movie Eternals. Salma Hayek and Demián Bichir will star in her upcoming film, Without Blood, which she is currently working on directing.
