Following an alleged “physical altercation” with a student athlete, Belleville Township High School District 201 has terminated the employment of a football coach. According to reports, the Belleville Police Department is looking into the situation.

UPDATE 11:30 A.M: The circumstances underlying the coach’s departure from the district have not been disclosed, it has been made clear in this item, which has been updated.
According to a statement from the department, the Belleville Police Department was summoned to the school at 6:50 p.m. on Thursday to look into a “disturbance.” Other information concerning the case was kept under wraps, only saying that “the inquiry is active and pending.”
The coach’s identity was not made public, and it is unclear whether he or she was fired or quit.
Superintendent of District 201 Brian Mentzer said in a statement on Wednesday: “The individual is no longer an employee of the district.”
The incident occurred following football practice and the school “informed all appropriate authorities, and launched an investigation.”
“The school district took immediate measures to ensure that the football coach had no contact with anyone at school or on school property,” the district’s statement said.
“Belleville West takes these incidents seriously. The safety and security of our students and staff are of utmost importance.”
Mentzer stated that he was unable to disclose additional information regarding the altercation, including information regarding the coach’s termination from the district.
This season, the Belleville West football team has an 0-8 record.
