Audrey Tautou
Audrey didn’t know how to deal with fame at first: “I remember when I became very famous after Amelie. I was in a restaurant for my birthday with a friend. There was a huge table of people beside us and I was not really aware of this new celebrity I was experiencing. A guy came over and gave me a kiss on the cheek. I was shocked. Then he went back to his table and everybody was applauding him like he had won a bet. I was traumatised. I had become a bet! But now I’ve accepted the situation and I know how to handle it better.”
Emma feels there is so much pressure on her to be perfect at all times that she can often struggle with it:”It just intensifies the whole thing. I think going through adolescence in the spotlight probably wasn’t the easiest, but when I feel insecure I just focus on the work, on what I’m doing. I try not to get too caught up in it. Because a lot of photographs are taken, you’re constantly evaluating your appearance, which most people don’t really have to do. It can be tough. It’s just part of the job. I’ve never really known anything else. It all happened when I was so young.”
Kristen was shocked by how she effected people when she first shot to fame thanks to ‘Twilight’: “I’m really not good at it. Some people are great at it. It’s like the other side of the job. I can’t believe I have to do it.It makes it easier because I’m really proud of the movie and I’m a fan of the book as well. It’s weird to see people mainly my age flipping out over Rob walking into the room. He shifts in his seat and they all just go crazy. It’s a little daunting.”
Paul might have struggled with fame for much of his life but he feels it is harder these days than ever before: “It’s never been as hard as it is nowadays to be famous. And I should know what I’m talking about, because I’ve got decades of experience in the subject. Today everybody’s got a telephone with a built-in camera. If I’m walking down the street I don’t really care. It also not really a problem if I’m going into the cinema or going shopping – I don’t really mind. I’m always polite to the people that speak to me. No need to make it complicated. I’ve known from an early age that for the public I am an exciting figure – and I have had time to get used to it. But even for me nowadays it sometimes gets too much.
Pippa was thrown into the spotlight as the sister of Kate Middleton and still can’t make sense of it: “It’s a bit startling to achieve global recognition before the age of 30 on account of your sister, your brother-in-law and your bottom. One day I might be able to make sense of this. In the meantime I think it’s fair to say that it has its upside and its downside… I can assure you that it feels even stranger to me than it probably does to you to have seen so much written about me when I have done so little to paint a picture of myself. “
