5 Star Moms Speak on Balancing Motherhood and Work

These 5 celebrity mothers have all embraced motherhood despite their hugely busy careers – so how do they do it? They miss sleep, they get help from their husbands, they hire a nanny, they bring their kids to work, or… something. They find a balance and make it work for them, although some admit that at times, it doesn’t even work and they are left tired, restless and often in despair, but they know it is worth it to have an amazing family. As hard as it is, these stars keep on working and manage to make enough time for the kids too, creating a balance between both of their lives that they are ultimately happy with.

Amy Adams

Amy loves balancing her work with her family life and always makes time for her daughter:”I love that balance. I had a talk show blitz the other day. I had three hours down, so I raced home, changed out of my nice clothes and we walked to Central Park (in New York City) and did the merry-go-round because I promised her we’d do it before we went back – and she remembers. And then we walked back.”

Selma Blair

Selma honestly says her time as a mother has been both disastrous and rewarding: “Somehow I was just hanging on. But then it caught up with me – totally – and, since then, I’ve just fallen apart. I need to get myself back together so I can go back to work so I can pay for a house for this baby. I’m seriously sleep-deprived; I can barely put a word together. I have not functioned. I’d go to these ‘Mommy & Me’ classes and they’d be like, ‘Oh, my God, my kid still wakes up twice a night or once a night,’ and I’d just burst into tears, thinking, ‘Oh, I wish! I wish my child woke up twice a night! I’m definitely struggling right now, like so many mums who are trying to be as close to their child as they can and get back to work. It’s such a common problem, but you feel like you’re the only one in the world. It’s (motherhood) one of the most horrendous things that’s ever happened to me, as well as the most amazing.”

Madonna

Madonna candidly comments that it can be extremely hard but she has learned to multitask:”I’m not going to lie – it’s hard work having four kids and doing all the work I do. Everybody has something to say about the way I live my life. At the end of the day I’m doing my best. If people don’t like it, then that’s really their problem. Sometimes I cope with it very well, sometimes it’s a struggle. It’s a challenge juggling everything — multi-tasking is my middle name.”

Kourtney Kardashian

Kourtney often feels comfortable bringing her son to work which makes it easier: “I bring Mason with me everywhere that I can as long as it’s safe. I struggle with the thought of whether I should be leaving him at home to have a regular set schedule and nap even if that means not being with me. I think whatever works for each individual situation is best. Mason is so easygoing and loves seeing new places and meeting new people. I love having him with me and always knowing he is safe and taken care of. It fits into my lifestyle.”

Angelina Jolie

Angelina finds being with her family can take all of her energy so it is good to go to work too: “When me or Brad go away and work on films it gives us a bit of a break from the daily routine of being in the house and looking after the kids. You get spoiled on a film set and in some ways it’s easier to be working long hours on a movie than taking care of a large family just because you do get very tired at the end of the day. I felt that way especially after the twins were born because the demands on your time are so great. It meant that Brad had to spend a lot more time with the other kids because mommy was too busy or tired.”
