Both the Miami Heat and the host New York Knicks are dealing with injuries as they prepare for Game 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series on Tuesday.
Update Injury for Miami Heat and New York Knicks
With 5:05 remaining in the fourth quarter of the series opener, Heat star Jimmy Butler rolled his right ankle and fell to the court following a foul by Josh Hart. Butler stayed in the game and played the most of the rest of the way as eighth-seeded Miami defeated fifth-seeded New York 108-101.
“You just don’t know with ankle sprains,” remarked Heat coach Erik Spoelstra after the game. “I’m not even sure if we’ll know anything by Monday.” We’ll just have to wait and see. It’ll be a game of waiting.”
With Game 2 of the best-of-seven series on the horizon, the wait isn’t too lengthy, but there are three days off before Game 3 on Saturday in Miami.
Butler led the squad with 25 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and two steals in the first game of the series. In the playoffs, he is averaging 35.5 points per game.
Butler has been undergoing therapy around the clock, according to head coach Erik Spoelstra, but his official availability won’t be known until a few hours before Tuesday’s 7:30 p.m. ET.
While Butler completed Game 1, New York’s star forward Julius Randle was unable to begin it due to a sprained left ankle. On Wednesday, he worsened the injury in Game 5 of the first-round series against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Randle (ankle) is questionable for Tuesday’s game, according to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News.
According to head coach Tom Thibodeau, the Knicks only had a film day on Monday, so there wasn’t much for Randle to do physically. According to Fred Katz of The Athletic, the coach did say that the forward was “responding well overall,” and the elevation to doubtful supports that.
Randle was previously listed as questionable before being ruled out for Game 1, and while he’s improving, his official availability won’t be revealed until a few hours before Tuesday’s 7:30 p.m. ET.
During the regular season, Randle led the squad in points (25.1), rebounds (10.0), and assists (4.1).
With Obi Toppin starting in place of Randle, the Knicks shot 20.6 percent from 3-point range (7-for-34) and were outscored 39-21 from beyond the arc on Sunday. They also missed eight of their twenty free throw tries.
Jalen Brunson, who averaged 24.0 points per game in the first round, finished with 25 on Sunday, although on 23 attempts from the field. He went 0-for-7 from 3-point range, while Barrett (1-for-5) and Hart (0-for-4) also struggled from distance.
Gabe Vincent led the Heat with 20 points, draining five of Miami’s 13 3-point attempts. Lowry scored 18 points off the bench, and Adebayo had 25.
