Scarlett Johansson has spoken out about her ‘bizarre’ sex scene in the 2013 film with Joaquin Phoenix. She recalled having to listen to her own phony orgasm.
Scarlett Johansson flinched after hearing her ‘gross’ phony orgasm following a ‘bizarre’ sex scene
In the 2013 indie film, the 37-year-old actress voices Samantha, a computer program who is only present on screen through her voice and with whom Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) falls in love.
When they start dating, they become intimate through a verbal sexual encounter, and the screen goes black for the duration of the intense scene.
Nearly a decade after the film’s release, the Marvel star revealed how “awkward” the scene was and how her co-star was forced to leave the studio as a result.
“You don’t want to hear your voice ever,” the Black Widow star said on Dax Shephard’s Armchair Expert podcast. You certainly don’t want to hear yourself having an orgasm.
“You definitely don’t want to hear what you sound like having a fake orgasm — ew. It’s so gross. It was so bizarre.”
She added: “We tried to get through one take, and he was, like, losing it. He was so upset about it. He left the studio. He needed a break.”
“I haven’t watched that movie in a long time but if I did, I bet I would be so mortified! It’s tough. Even thinking about it now, it’s giving me soul panic.”
When asked about the actual recording work for the film, the Oscar nominee admitted it was “so exhaustive,” adding: “We recorded that movie in its entirety 40 or 50 times.”
Her mother-in-law, she added, had a “little bit of a harder time” with it: “She kept suggesting other versions of it for a while. I was like, ‘He’s already here. He’s out. Like, it’s past that time’.”
