Through the first five weeks, Josh Jacobs and Derrick Henry have looked like the Crimson Tide’s two best NFL running backs.

Brian Robinson Jr., a rookie running back for the Washington Commanders, made his NFL debut this week after being shot twice in the leg on Aug. 28. Robinson gained 22 yards on nine carries against the Titans.

The 98th overall pick was expected to be Washington’s third string running back, but his efforts during training camp elevated him to a possible starting role.

He has a chance to have a breakout game against the 2-3 Chicago Bears on Thursday night now that he is fully healthy.

The Commanders have the league’s worst record. A new rookie leader could be just what they need to make a comeback.

On the defensive side of the ball, Washington has some talent as well. Jonathan Allen and DaRon Payne, both Crimson Tide products, have been key contributors this season.

Several former Alabama defensive standouts, including Minkah Fitzpatrick, Trevon Diggs, Eddie Jackson, and others, are off to strong starts this season.

Pat Surtain II, a cornerback for the Denver Broncos, is one defensive player who is showing signs of potential greatness.

Surtain was among the best defensive rookies last season, but Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons was unanimously named Defensive Rookie of the Year.

The Denver Broncos’ offense has struggled this season, but their Surtain-led secondary has been among the best in the NFL. The 22-year-old was named to the PFF Early NFL All-Pro Second Team.
