The legendary fashion designer Carolina Herrera has opened up on her extensive and impressive career. She admits that it hasn’t always been smooth sailing, and there are often “horrible moments” when she feels stuck and unsure of what to do. She even sometimes regrets being a designer on occasion but is always able to push past that feeling and find something new:
“There are moments, always, horrible moments, where you feel like you cannot get over the hurdle. But you have to forget about it. At one point you’re going to say, ‘Why did I do this? There’s so many problems, it’s not worth it.’ But if you really have the passion for fashion, for what you’re doing, you’re going to keep going. But you have to feel it.”
Speaking on fashion critics, Carolina says that her most important mission is just to be happy with what she has created herself and to make her clothing individual. Besides that, she isn’t too concerned with what the press have to say:
“I think it’s the most important thing to establish your own style, your own signature – and not because someone else is doing it very well and you have to copy that. No, you have to be strong about your taste and say, ‘I am going to do this, this is my line,’ even if the press doesn’t like it.”
Carolina believes women find multitasking easier than men, so she has been able to balance her life with her demanding career quite well throughout the years and has a big family who supports her now:
“For a woman, it’s much easier than a man, because a man can only do one thing at a time. Women are used to multitasking: I have daughters, grandchildren, and now great-grandchildren. I have dogs. My family is really enormous. I think a bit of discipline helps, too.”
