FKA Twigs was shaken when she received racial abuse: “I am genuinely shocked and disgusted at the amount of racism that has been infecting my account the past week. Racism is unacceptable in the real world, and it’s unacceptable online.”

Jessie J

Jessie is still shocked by some fan abuse: ”It’s hard. I still have a heart deficiency and have days where I struggle. The fans don’t get that sometimes. The abuse you get if you have to cancel a show … It’s scary. With social media, young people use words of hatred so flippantly now. It’s either ‘I LOVE YOU!’ or ‘I HATE YOU AND I WANT YOU TO DIE’. There is no middle ground. Everything’s an extreme because people want to be noticed … I tend not to read my social media timeline as much as I used to, because I try to lead a very positive life and Twitter can be quite dark sometimes.”

Lena Dunham

Lena has come to accept that people will always have mean things to say and she has distanced herself from it: “You know, it gets easier and easier. My fears came true: people called me fat and hideous, and I lived. And now I keep living.”

Lily James
