Bouncing back after a breakup is never easy and can take some people a long time. They may even need support – not just from family and friends but even a councilor could help them readjust to life without the partner they’ve split from. Here is what 5 celebrities have to say on the topic of heartbreak. Some have been through bitter divorces, others had their heart broken at a young age and have since learned a lot about love, and others say they are able to recover quite easily from a breakup. While some of these celebrities admit they fell in to a bout of depression and found it hard to cope, others felt an urge to move on and not allow the split to take over their lives.
Jennifer Lopez
Jennifer went through a divorce from husband Marc Anthony but she wouldn’t let herself wallow in it for long: ”I was going through a divorce and the break-up of a family, which was devastating to me because family means everything to me. I didn’t want to be the woman who stayed in bed for months. I did do that a little but I knew I had to get through it. I had to figure out what I did wrong that I was in a relationship where I was accepting situations that weren’t good for me. If you’re allowing yourself to be in a bad relationship, you need to understand why. I had to turn [the break-up] into something better. I thought, ‘I don’t want to just survive it, I want to come out better.’ ”
The ‘Harry Potter’ author was left depressed following her split from her husband in 1992 but she sought help for the sake of her daughter and got through it: “Mid-20s life circumstances were poor and I really plummeted,” she said. “The thing that made me go for help… was probably my daughter. She was something that earthed me, grounded me, and I thought, this isn’t right, this can’t be right, she cannot grow up with me in this state. We’re talking suicidal thoughts here, we’re not talking ‘I’m a little bit miserable’, Two weeks later I had a phone call from my regular GP who had looked back over the notes… She called me back in and I got counselling through her.”
Miley admits that when she was just 14, she suffered a huge heartbreak but she says that there is always a light at the end: “I had my biggest heartbreak when I was 14 even though that sounds crazy, because I was 14, but that’s what love was to me. I was in love with somebody. I was in love with this person that I thought was so perfect and so amazing, so when you get your heart broken that’s all you see. I’m like, ‘The rest of my life is ruined because he doesn’t love me back… He doesn’t think I’m pretty, then I’m not pretty, he doesn’t think I’m worth his time, I’m not worth anyone’s time. I think just remember that this shall pass, it’s not the end of the world, you’ve got to keep going. It’s generic but it’s true. It’s a big something to remember… My dad always said it to me, and I never really listened, I would always sweat the small stuff. ‘This too shall pass.’ That’s something that I so needed to remember.”
Rihanna admits she fears falling in love because she doesn’t want to have her heart broken: ”When I was in love, I fell so hard … The way it made me feel was priceless. And in a blink of an eye my whole life changed. Everything that I knew was different. I never thought I’d feel that pain in my life. I’m afraid of feeling that again.”
Zoe says she recovers easily from heartbreak: “I feel it (heartache). I allow myself to feel it. Of course everyone around me will notice how it (a break-up) made me feel, but I tend to recover very easily. When I lose, when my heart is broken, when I lose a competition, when I don’t get something, when something doesn’t go my way or I have a heartbreak or whatever, maybe it’s just the kind of person that I am, or maybe I haven’t really fallen in love yet, had that crash boom bam in my life yet, but I tend to recover… healthy and smoothly. And I’ve been that way up until now. And if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it (sic).”
