Jake no longer hits the gym but does try to take care of himself by eating right and that includes growing his own veg: “I used to go to the gym but I don’t do that anymore. I don’t follow a special diet but I try and eat well, so I grow my own vegetables.”
Jennie has turned growing veg into a fun hobby to do with her kids: “I recently, with my girls, planted a very small garden in our front yard of our city house and I don’t really care that everyone can see it because I have to have a garden somewhere and they love it. We have lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, sugar snap peas, and strawberries. The girls love getting dirty and picking vegetables they want to grow every year and watering them and growing them. I let them help me cook them, which puts a different perspective on it. I’m not just serving the food to them and forcing them to eat it. They really are invested and they care about what they’re eating. Kids like the vegetables when they’re raw, actually, and they can dip them into ranch dressing or chocolate; I don’t care as long as they’re eating their vegetables!”
Johnny grows his own veg at his home in France and it’s often the only excuse he has to leave his house when he’s staying there: “We have a great place in the South of France. It’s a little hamlet – only about 45 acres – and I don’t do anything. I’ve not left the property for three months at a time. I literally just wake up, go out, check the garden and see the vegetables growing. It’s a pristine existence in terms of simplicity. There’s no talk of movies or work and, infinitely more important, the telephone never rings. It really is a beautiful, simple life.”
Nicole loves to cultivate her own veg for the summer months when she’s at home in Nashville, Tennessee: “We just planted our vegetables for the summer and all we have at the moment is lettuce. I’m hoping the corn will be beautiful, because I love eating corn out of the garden. And we just bought some alpacas. They are sort of the cousins of llamas, which I’ve always wanted because of their long necks and eyelashes.”
Sarah has recently started growing her own vegetables and loves to make amazing organic treats for herself: “I sound like an old granny, but I’ve really got into gardening and I’ve been growing my own veggies. I’ve bought these old barrels and I grow organic fruit and veg in them. Garlic, onions, lettuce, carrots, strawberries, raspberries – the lot. I started it after watching a TV show about gardening. I wanted to start eating more organic stuff and I had the space to grow my own, so I thought, ‘Why not?’ But I don’t think you’ll be seeing the Sarah Harding Organic Range Of Vegetables any time soon!”
