Others say they adore piecing together outfits but never look at the obvious trends and often opt for a classic, more timeless look instead. Proving that you don’t have to buy in to whatever fashion’s latest obsession is, these 5 stylish stars all say they couldn’t care less about what is supposedly fashionable.
Alexa Chung
Alexa has always been known for her quirky dress-sense and she says she never follows fashion: “I’m bad at trends. Just wear what you want and what suits you. My favourite item of clothing are my denim shorts which I wear almost daily. Other than that it’s an antique Cameo ring I got from Spitalfields Market in east London or my small Chanel bag.”
Carey Mulligan
Carey loves clothes but isn’t interested in blindly following trends: “I love clothes. In a way I have a much better understanding of the artistry involved in designing than I did two year ago but I don’t follow fashion all the time. I don’t take an active interest and go to fashion shows or anything. Not because I don’t think they are all brilliant at what they do, but I really don’t mind what I wear as long as it’s sort of knee-length.”
Emma Watson
Emma likes to have classic style so stays away from trendy pieces: “I don’t follow trends much, because I don’t like to dress like everybody else. I think that’s why I hate trends, actually. But I do like to read fashion magazines so I don’t feel so isolated. I think my own style is classic and simple. I try to be elegant, but at the same time laid back and relaxed. If what you’re not feeling what you’re wearing or if you’re not sure, don’t wear it.”
Erin O’Connor
Erin has delevoped her own tastes over the years based on what suits her figure: “I have a default style. Ironically I have never coped with trends very well. I am much more of a classic dresser. I have always felt trends bring out all sorts of insecurities. I feel once you have got to grips with your body shape, it is best that you continue to dress with what suits you and what you feel good in. That’s the most important thing – there is nothing wrong with wanting to go out dresses as a peacock every now and then, as long as you are simply feeling the moment.”
Sienna Miller
New mom Sienna says she doesn’t have time to follow fashion but loves to create her own style: ”I don’t even know what the current trends are! With my daughter, Marlowe, I’m not really able to follow fashion. To be honest, I’ve never paid much attention to it. I was just at the right place at the right time. I love fashion, but I’m not obsessed with it. I like to work on my style but I don’t only think about that, even though others might think so. I don’t wake up in the morning and think, ‘Hmm I’m such an icon!’ My life is very different: I’ve got a baby who hardly lets me get two hours sleep each night.”
