It’s the nature of the film and music industry to have disposable people, as careers often end up burning out or losing their audience’s interest. These 5 stars all worry that they’ll end up with no work someday. Although some felt that way strongly in the past, they have since become more established and thus more comfortable with their career as a definite thing. Others still believe that any day now, it can all be over and they live in fear that their dream will come to an end no matter how successful they become in the process.
Dominic Cooper
Dominic keeps expecting his career to abruptly end: “It’s funny because I never think I’m doing that well. I’m waiting for a tap on the shoulder to tell me to give it up. I constantly think all this isn’t going to plan. This isn’t working out. There is no security. Every actor worries about their next job. You’re your own worst critic. Whenever you watch yourself, it’s you prancing around being ridiculous. So it’s hard to be self-congratulating.”
Taylor Swift
Taylor wants it to last so always thinks it’s too good to be true: “This is what I’ve wanted to do my whole life. It never freaks me out. Never. Ever. But you know what does freak me out? When is the other shoe going to drop? I am so happy right now. So I am always living in fear. This can’t be real, right? This can’t really be my life.”
Scarlett Johansson
At the end of each film, Scarlett starts to think her career has finished: ”I feel fortunate enough to be able to fool everyone into thinking that I’m capable. But it’s true, you know what I mean? I think every actor, when you finish a job you’re like, ‘Oh man, that’ll probably be the last time I ever work again… It’s a volatile industry. One that’s been very kind to me. But I think always in the back of your head you’re preparing for, you know, absolute demise, the inevitable decline of your career. That’s just an actor’s neurosis, I think!”
Kate Winslet
Kate says she worries less about the end of her career now that she’ older: “I’m not going to get upset the way I used to. Once you’re in your 30s you learn not to panic or stress too much about work. You don’t let the ups and downs of your career affect your sense of self-worth or personal well-being. That’s probably the greatest lesson I’ve learnt from all of this.”
Johnny Depp
Johnny always thought he’d end up pumping gas: “I always wonder when I’m going to be rumbled and sent packing. It could happen tomorrow. I might end up playing guitar in some bar. Or pumping gas? I honestly believe it’s a miracle that I get jobs. I never dared to dream I’d ever get this far and stay around for so long.”
