Receiving an Oscar may be seen as a the ultimate success for those who strive to make it as an actor or actress in Hollywood, but these 5 stars all claim that they don’t have their sights set on a golden statue of their own. Some don’t like the politics behind the awards show, some believe it actually wouldn’t be beneficial for their career and others just don’t think they could handle making an important speech in front of the big crowd on the night because it would be too nerve-wracking. They all have their own personal reasons for wanting to avoid the Oscars, even if they receive nominations for their work, they aren’t worried about losing out because it’s now a goal they’ve set for themselves.
Bradley Cooper
Bradley doesn’t think an Oscar would benefit him and it isn’t the only thing in life: ”I don’t want to win an Oscar. It would change nothing. Nothing. The things in my life that aren’t fulfilled would not be fulfilled. Career-wise, right now, it’s better that I don’t win one. I don’t want to win. I don’t.”
Isla isn’t interested in the Oscars because she loves light-hearted comedy roles so it hasn’t been an aim for her in life: “I just love tapping into my inner-idiot! It’s fun. I’ve never aspired to have an Oscar. I love dramatic movies, I appreciate them, I love dramatic actors and actresses but I really love comedy.”
Joaquin thinks the competition is cruel because it puts people against each other: “I think it’s bullshit, I think it’s total, utter bullshit, and I don’t want to be a part of it. I don’t believe in it. It’s a carrot, but it’s the worst-tasting carrot I’ve ever tasted in my whole life. I don’t want this carrot. It’s totally subjective. Pitting people against each other … It’s the stupidest thing in the whole world.”
Depp has been nominated twice for an Oscar but he honestly doesn’t want one because the idea of having to make a big speech scares him: “I don’t want to get up in front of all these people and thank them. It scares the s***t out of me! The nomination was enough for me. I felt very honoured. It’s not really about the awards, though, it’s about the work for me. I just love acting.”
Tom reveals that he never grew up watching The Oscars so it’s not something he dreams about winning an award at: “I didn’t grow up watching the Oscars, so it’s never been a goal. I wanted to act. People have tried to get me to do a role by saying, ‘This is your Oscar.’ That means nothing to me.”
