Keira Knightley
Keira’s first film part came when she was still in school and jealous girls bullied her which made her grow a thicker skin as a result: “It was difficult – because you take time out, you lose your friends and have to wriggle your way back in. I did a film called The Hole when I was 16 and, when it came out, a couple of the popular girls at school said, quite loudly, ‘She’s in a c**p movie, so it doesn’t count.’ It was rude and I was upset, but if you let that stuff bother you, you’re going to be in for a tough time. I wasn’t popular at school. I learned to let those comments wash over me. I toughened up quite quickly.”
Mila quickly grew aware of “how life works” as she shot to fame at a young age in Los Angeles: ”You build it up. My dad always said I have a really good backbone. I grew up in LA, I didn’t grow up wealthy or even middle class, we were pretty poor and you learn how life works very quickly.”
Renee has found her time in the spotlight difficult but believes it has made her harder: “I find fame really difficult. Has it changed me? Yes it has. I am a little harder, because it’s not easy to lose your voice.”
Rihanna has gone through many negative experiences in the spotlight but she believes they’ve only made her stronger: “In life, every negative that happens leads to something great – you just can’t see it at the time. I wouldn’t be the woman I am today without the bad things that have happened to me. My skin wouldn’t be this thick and you need that in this industry.”
Victoria copes with fame easily because she is used to it and knows that she isn’t really the way the media present her: ‘How do I cope? I cope because I have to, because it’s the way my life is. I’m hardened to it. I know how I’m perceived is not how I am, and that’s what matters.”
