Daniel Radcliffe
As a boy, Daniel told his mother that he wasn’t good at school: “I said to my mum, when I was seven or eight, I was in the bath, ‘I’m not good at anything, I’m not good at sports, I’m not good at school, and I remember my mum saying ‘but you’ve got social skills,’ and I remember turning round to her and saying ‘that doesn’t count’. When I say I wasn’t good at school, I do mean that.”
Ed didn’t find school interesting: “I was not stimulated by school whatsoever. In almost every lesson I thought, ‘This is pointless. What am I going to do with Biology or Chemistry?’ I was sure that I could find a job in music. I could make tea at Island Records or be a studio hand, or I could end up being a songwriter. I didn’t do homework and I remember not turning up to school for a long time. I had a lot of detentions and suspensions, which didn’t go down well.”
Justin admits he wasn’t driven to learn at school: “What happened was I found something I wanted to be good at. I wasn’t good at school because I had no passion for it. If I hadn’t found music my life would have been bad. My family are all poor, so the cycle would have continued. My kids would have been poor, and their kids would have been too. I feel I broke the cycle, and when you get to break the cycle, you don’t go back.”
Kristen couldn’t get on with any of her peers: “When I was at school I couldn’t relate to kids my own age. They were mean. You can’t generalize about people because I’m sure some of those kids were brave, but they don’t give you any chance.”
Ryan found himself struggling at school and was lonely: “I was a lonely child, I didn’t do well at school and TV was my only friend. Then, one day, I saw Raquel Welch on ‘The Muppet Show.’ … She was the first crush I ever had, and I thought, ‘How do I get to meet this woman?’ And then I thought, ‘Well, she’s on TV, so to meet her I have to get on TV myself.”
