Not willing to let their kids start out too early, these 5 celebrities all say they don’t like the idea of their own kids becoming child stars. Some speak from experience having stepped out in to the spotlight themselves at young ages, while others just don’t think their children need to work at that age and can always develop their talents and launch their careers after they’ve enjoyed their childhood as normal kids. Just wanting their children to be themselves while they can, these 5 celebrities say they don’t want their offspring launching careers just yet, but they may be willing to help them out in the future when they’re really ready to do so.
Helen Hunt
Helen wouldn’t let her young daughter step in to the spotlight at an early age: “Oh God, no! I can’t look at it that way. She’s 6, and I was older than that, at least. There are ways to do it where you’re not on a movie set with 60 adults, which I loved at the time, but as a parent, I don’t know that I’d be dying to put her in that spot”.
LeAnn would help her children develop their talent but wouldn’t push them in to fame: ”I’d let [my own child] develop their talent but it’s important to let kids be kids. I wouldn’t encourage them to enter the industry at a young age. I’d be honest with them about what goes on – it’s not a fairy tale. Wanting to be a superstar is all very well but don’t believe the facade. Especially because it’s getting harder to get into the industry anyway.”
Milla finds the idea of child stars creepy and won’t let her daughter Ever start out early: “She’s not going to be a working child. For me it’s kind of creepy, the whole working kid kind of thing. We were struggling financially, we were immigrants from Russia and we really needed to succeed. My mom saw talent in me and she wanted to make the best and most out of it. There is no real use for Ever to work. I definitely want my daughter to just be a child. Work hard in school and find your passion, slowly.”
Molly wouldn’t let her young daughter work as a child but would help her to work on her career at a later stage: “Mathilda is very wilful, headstrong and very intelligent, but so far she’s shown no interest in being on stage. I think she’s more of a behind-the-scenes person. That could change after college and all that. If she wants to do it, I would support her, but after college. Not as a child. I think that it’s hard having grown up in the business. I think it’s something I wouldn’t want for my own children. If they want to do it later, that’s great. But I think I just want them to be kids. I think that that’s the best thing that anyone can have, whether they’re an actor or not. That’s what I want to have for my own family. Show business is very hard for anyone, but particularly for kids. I think without that strong family background, it’s very challenging.”
Nick doesn’t want his young twins starting off too early: ”Absolutely not. That’s my personal feeling. If you asked my wife, she would say, ‘Yes! Let’s sign them up next year!’ The thing that is great about this show is that you’re giving people who would never have an opportunity at stardom an opportunity. As a parent, and maybe because I’m a new parent, I am so protective and so sensitive and would never want anyone to judge my child.”
