‘Against Me!‘ singer Tom Gabel has revealed to Rolling Stone magazine that he has plans to have a sex change. Tom has struggled with his gender all of his life, and now wants to undergo the full process to become a woman. He bravely told the publication:
“Growing up, my experience with transsexualism was nothing but shame” and is hoping that now “People will understand, and [I hope] they’ll be fairly kind.”
Tom has plans to start the transition immediately and will begin electrolysis treatments and taking female hormones shortly. He is also open to having gender reassignment surgery in the future. He is hoping to go by the name ‘Laura Jane Grace’ in the future and although he identifies as female, he is not attracted to males, which he has explained to his wife Heather who will remain married to him. Telling his wife was something which frightened Tom, but he was pleasantly surprised:
“For me, the most terrifying thing about this was how she would accept the news, but she’s been super-amazing and understanding.”
Many of Tom’s songs with ‘Against Me!’ have hinted at his gender struggles, including ‘The Ocean’ and new song named ‘Transgender Dysphoria Blues’.
