Taylor Hicks: AI Diva? Posted by Kim on 15 Feb 2007
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, these two look like they really hate each other.
I came across this article a couple of days ago but brushed it off as your typical, laughable tabloid fodder. Unsurprisingly though, the story has legs and some folks are actually buying it. So I see it as my place to clear up a few facts here:
“The minute Taylor made the top 24, he became difficult and he seemed to get worse over time,” a source told the tab. All the male contestants on the show became friends — except Hicks.
All of the other guys (except Chris) sung with Taylor and his band regularly after the shows on the AI tour. My guess is the boys weren't getting paid for something that was pretty much out of the hands of AI execs. If they weren't friends with him, they have a funny way of showing it.
As for Taylor being difficult...yeah, I buy that. He already admitted that he refused to sing the winners single that had been handed to him, and fought for Do I Make You Proud (which was previously Elliott's song). Their idea of "difficult" sounds more like "doesn't want to be molded into a cookie cutter pop star". In that case, I say bring on the Divo!
Some examples cited by Star (and Star is always reputable, ya know): when in the top ten, Taylor didn’t want a bodyguard to accompany him to the men’s room as required and reportedly told one to “[bleep] off,” he refused to go to photo shoots, and he wouldn’t speak to others in the show’s green room.
The "bleep off" part is more amusing than anything.
This is a pretty good example of why I RARELY post anything from tabloids.
298k For Taylor Hicks Posted by Kim on 20 Dec 2006
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Taylor Hicks HAS to be happy after learning today that his album debuted at #2 on the Billboard Charts with 298,000 copies sold! Not to shabby, especially since I predicted about 150k....heh, whoops. He was edged out for the #1 spot by some rapper named Young Jeezy.
But slightly more interesting than the Billboard charts, here's how the American Idol debut first week sales charts look, if you will:
Taylor Hicks Album Review Posted by Tiff on 14 Dec 2006
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a song-by-song review of 'American Idol' winner, Taylor Hicks' self titled debut CD release on Arista Records.
"Heaven Knows" is interesting. It's got a jazz/rock feel, and it sounds a lot like something Taylor would've loved. Very Michael McDonald. "Wherever I Lay My Hat" - I actually really like this one. It's got a very Adult contemporary feel, and it's a very humble song. "Give Me Tonight" - The music is interesting. I'm really not too crazy about it. It's kind of discoesque in a way. "The Maze" - Voice-wise, he sounds good on this one. It's another faster song, but the tempo of the music is faster than his voice on the verses, intentionally. The chorus has potential to be catchy. "Places I've Been" - I really like the music to this one. It's mid-tempo, and it sounds like a more personal song in terms of lyrics. "The only face I wanna see belongs to you..." and "You're what was missing..." This very well might be my favorite.
"The Right Place" - This song has a relaxed, jazzy, slightly blues feel. A bit Ray LaMontagne. It's pretty good, though I don't usually listent to this type of music much."Gonna Move" - A very up-tempo song, I automatically can picture Taylor dancing around to the opening riffs, but it slows down a bit, surprisingly, then it picks up on the chorus. It's a song that tells a story."Just To Feel That Way" - Immediately I loved the piano on this, and the lyrics go well too, at least in my opinion. It sounds a bit different from the stuff out there right now, and that's what I like about it. I'm actually loving this one really. Another favorite."Soul Thing" - An appropriately very "soul" sounding song that the 'Soul Patrol' is sure to like. It's pretty good, but not usually what I listen to, save the occasionally Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald, which is quite different than this.
"The Runaround" - I'm really not sure how I feel about this one, I think it has the potential to grow on me. I really like the vocals, but I'm not so crazy about the brass instruments. But like I said, it might grow on me."Dream Myself Awake" - The music almost sounded like "Lean On Me" when it started, and I was find of like 'hmmmm...' but then he started singing, and I have to say I like this song a lot. Something about the lyrics, I think.... And the chorus is flipping catchy too. Another good one. "The Deal" - Oh, was I ever happy to hear an acoustic guitar. This has almost a....Jack Johnson/Chris Garneau feel to it, meeting some of the 70's music. My mom will like this one. (She loves Taylor anyway.)
So my favorites are: "Places I've Been," "Just To Feel That Way," and "Dream Myself Awake"
It's pretty good, especially considering I hadn't listened to any of the early stuff/clips, and I wasn't sure at all what to expect. After all, he could fit into several categories. I'm thinking 'Adult Contemporary' will be where he'll likely fall into line best. He's got some solid songs here, at least in a few, that are radio-friendly. It also sounds like he stuck to being himself, and he didn't worry about trying to sound popular, and I say props to that.
Rating: Three and a half out of five stars.
Download This: "Just To Feel That Way" or "Places I've Been" (they're both great)
I'll be putting a few of these on repeat, for sure.
Taylor Hicks Headed for 300k Posted by Kim on 13 Dec 2006
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It looks like another contestant from AI5 is headed for a strong debut. In case you were hiding under a rock (or too wrapped up in all the strategic Katharine marketing) Taylors album dropped yesterday. As usual, Hits Daily Double predicts the sales on Wednesdays, and they're saying the album should debut in the top 3 with around 300,000 copies sold. Awesome numbers! And so far their predictions have come in just a little bit low for Chris Daughtry and Clay Aiken, so we'll see what happens next week!

ETA: Kim cutting in here, and listening to the album here! I'm so glad Taylor stuck to HIS sound on this album. It's solid, even if I'm not head over heels in love with every track. Really versatile album here...lots of soul, little bit of pop, R&B, some throwback stuff, country, and even a big AC ballad.
Check out: The Maze (current, radio friendly), Just To Feel That Way (gorgeous ballad) and The Right Place (straight up soul).
Katharine Does Shape & Taylor Lights The Tree Posted by Kim on 30 Nov 2006
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've gotta say, Katharine McPhee is lookin' pretty good for a change on the cover of Shape Magazine. Gorgeous swimsuit (or whatever that is). And I'm not sure if I should admit this but that Open Toes song is slowly growing on me....it's good for a workout, atleast. But its gonna be a whole lot longer until her cd drops!
Did anyone catch Taylor Hicks opening up the tree lighting in Rockerfeller Center? This was one cool performance! Check it out:
Taylor Hicks Album Preview Posted by Kim on 23 Nov 2006
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally, the last idol to check in, the winner himself. Check out the tracks:
The verdict: I'm officially "meh-ized" by these. I mean, atleast he isn't singing about shoes, but I find both of these songs to be pretty forgettable. Except perhaps The Right Place, which has the whole slow soulful sound I've always loved about him. Some fans are even saying that the first two are too pop. Even though they don't do much for me I actually think Taylor did a decent job at mixing his signature sound with something more upbeat.
A little more information on the third track, The Right Place...it was originally written by Bryan Adams for Ray Charles, who never recorded it. What an honor it must've been for Taylor to get his hands on a song that was meant for one of his idols!
Weekend Picture Post Posted by Kim on 19 Nov 2006
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry for the slow weekend guys! I've got some traveling and lots of school stuff to take care of so things will be a bit slow tomorrow. But I'll be back in full force Tuesday evening for up to the minute coverage of the American Music Awards! I'm hyped about this one with a bunch of ex Idols showing up and Josh Groban performing.
In the meantime, check out pics of Demi & Ashton, Lindsay Lohan, KFed and a bunch of others on the flip side!
Taylor Hicks Official Album Cover Posted by Kim on 03 Nov 2006
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture is great, the text is meh. I could've done that with Paint Shop, honestly. But it'll do. The album drops December 5th. To tell the truth, I've been keeping my eyes open for Katharines album cover as of late, considering it DOES come out a week before Taylors disc. Could this mean another delay for her? We'll see!
ETA: Katharines album has been pushed back....to December 5th. Wow, that date is STACKED.
I'm a little bit late with Fantasia's cover (which will be released Dec. 5th 12th). Weird picture, same problem with Paint Shop text. I think I have that font on my computer, actually.
