While most actors and actresses are buzzing about the upcoming Oscars which takes place this weekend, there is one actor who isn’t such a huge fan of the big Hollywood event. Ethan Hawke (who now has amazing blonde hair, see above) thinks the whole thing is pretty ridiculous because he doesn’t see a reason to turn acting into a competition. He comments that it’s already obvious who has succeeded in their careers without needing to hand out awards:
“People want to turn everything in this country into a competition… It’s clear who the winner is and who the loser is. It’s why they like to announce the grosses of movies, because it’s a way of saying, ‘This one is No. 1.’ It’s so asinine…”
Ethan believes that many people who have won Oscars in the past didn’t even deserve them and it doesn’t always work out that the best actor or actress is celebrated. He doesn’t understand why people should make chasing awards a priority in their lives:
“If you look at how many forgettable, stupid movies have won Oscars and how many mediocre performers have Oscars above their fireplace. Making a priority of chasing these fake carrots and money and dubious accolades, I think it’s really destructive.”
