So You Think You Can Dance? Michael Jackson Tribute in the Works?

I figured there would at least be a group dance or something of the sort dedicated to Michael Jackson on So You Think You Can Dance? this season, but according to Nigel Lythgoe’s twitter, they’re working on an entire episode based around his music!  Here are the specific tweets:

dizzyfeet At the same time as auditioning we’re trying to put together a major tribute to him Michael’s music works in every dance genre for the show

dizzyfeet Mia has chosen the song she likes, we’ve spoken to Wade. I’ve left messages for Paula. I’ve spoken to Shane. We have to make this happen!!?

dizzyfeet There is a problem clearing Michael’s music at the moment. We are trying to make contact with Sony to get clearance on an all Michael SYTYCD

dizzyfeet If we can make this ‘special’ happen it is thanks to many of you “Tweeters” out there who all had the same idea. “Twitter-Power” is awesome!

So, it looks like they’re working on it but it isn’t exactly a “go” yet.  On some message boards I’m seeing a lot of people doubting this idea, saying the music won’t work for every style.  Seriously?  Apparently some people don’t know Michael’s catalogue very well, and they surely must not pay close attention to this show; if you can make “Poker Face” and “Girlfriend” work for latin, then I’m sure there’s a way to make MJ’s music work.

Janette & Brandon – Something Latin
Kayla & Kupono – Contemporary
Caitlin & Jason – ??? (my guess is jazz or pop)
Karla & Vitolio – Quickstep
Jeanine & Phillip – Hip Hop by Nappy Tabs
Randi & Evan – Broadway by Joey Dowling
Melissa & Ade – Pas De Deux

Does this whole list look a bit, uh, contrived to anyone else?  Pretty much every couple is in their own style, even the couples who have already had that style just a couple of weeks ago (Jeanine & Phillip) or have gotten styles in a similar vein twice before (Melissa/Ade).   Oh, with the exception of Karla/Vitolio.  Ouch, quickstep; I guess we know who the judges want to see get the boot next!

And its speculated that the Contemporary will be by Sonya, but that doesn’t make much sense since she usually does Jazz.  So I’m thinking Caitlin/Jason will be doing a jazz routine by either Sonya or Wade (or heck, even pop by Brian). One of them will probably end up doing the contemporary routine, or perhaps Tyce will step in.
