Selena Gomez Speaks on Poor Childhood & The Disney Machine

Singer and actress Selena Gomez is sizzling hot on the latest cover of Elle, and inside the issue she speaks candidly about her poor childhood and how her mother still tried to educate her about the world despite their lack of money. Selena sounds in awe of her mother who worked hard to teach her:

“I can remember about seven times when our car got stuck on the highway because we’d run out of gas money… [but my mom still] saved up to take me to concerts. She took me to museums, aquariums, to teach me about the world, about what’s real.”

Selena calls Disney a “machine” but still insists that it didn’t change her and that she was able to stay true to herself and her own talents without being pushed around by the company who are known for creating major stars:

“[It] is a machine, so people automatically assume that you can’t work for the channel unless you act and sing and dance and sign up for all that. That’s absolutely not true. I always did everything the way I wanted to do it.”

Speaking on boyfriend Justin Bieber, and how he once romantically rented out the Staples Center like in the film ‘Mr. Deeds’ to watch Titanic, Selena gushes:

“He really is a hopeless romantic. I had just mentioned it in the car – all I said is that I really want to see Titanic again, and then…”
