Ryan Reynolds Gets “S**t-Your-Pants Fear” Over New Roles

Ryan Reynolds has admitted that he gets “shit-your-pants fear” when it comes to taking on risky new roles. He says he often likes to push himself and take on new kinds of roles, so with each step he gets worried that he’s going to ultimately blow it. While he admits that he can be afraid of those risks, he also thinks it’s beautiful to go outside of his comfort zone and push himself further so he can succeed even more:

”There’s s**t-your-pants fear around every corner because I’m usually stepping out of a comfort zone that I haven’t done before in a film. But that’s the wonder of it, the beauty of it.”

Ryan also says that he is always extremely critical of all of his own work and doesn’t give himself enough credit when he has done well. He admits there is a “self-loathing” streak that often gets to work when he’s examining how he’s done:

”I can’t say I’ve ever patted myself on the back and maybe that’s what keeps me going, and that’s a good thing. It speaks volumes about how I perceive myself. Like a lot of people, I’ve got a self-loathing streak that’s alive and well. It acts as a de facto engine when I’m working, but it also has its extraordinary pitfalls, too.”

Opening up on his later years, Ryan says he would love to continue working for as long as possible:

”Do I really want to survive [to be 95]? Yeah, I think [I would like to keep working]. If it could be like the experience I’m having now and again, yes. I don’t know what the outcome is, but I would love if it was meaningful in some way.”
