Zac Hanson Talks to the Advocate Posted by Tiff on 10 Apr 2007
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zac Hanson, of my long-time favorite band, Hanson sat down with 'The Advocate,' for an insightful (and slightly funny) interview.
"Short Answers: Zac Hanson"
Former Top 40 "Mmmboppers" Hanson return as indie rockers with The Walk (July 10th) on their own 3CG label. The band's youngest member, Zac, 21, recalls their gay past.
Q: Queer director Gus Van Sant shot the video for 1998's "Weird", a song you guys co-penned with gay songwriter-producer Desmond Child.
Zac: We chose to work with Gus because he's an incredibly talented director. I don't know if many people know this about Gus, but he's also an incredibly talented musician. He played a Woody Guthrie song with us once. I have this record [Gus] did called 18 Songs About Golf.
Q: You guys come from a religious background. Did Gus and Desmond influence your personal views toward gays and sexuality?
Zac: My feeling toward gays is always just... everybody chooses. People's sexuality and how they live their lives-they have to decide, and it's not for me to tell them or not to. I don't walk to the marching orders or anything like that.
Q: The song "Yearbook" is about someone upset over missing a guy named Johnny. Was this meant to be ambiguous? And more important, is Johnny hot?
Zac: Probably. Otherwise there wouldn't be so much controversy over where he is. I love that song because there are so many takes on what that would be. Maybe it's a gay song.
Q: The band is the subject of a lot of online fan fiction, most of which imagines all or one of you, especially Taylor, as gay.
Zac: That's one end of the spectrum, and the other end is people sending you death threats. I would go with fan fiction any day. And Taylor has that thing about him-and hopefully, he'll forgive me for saying this in an interview-he's just a good-looking pretty boy.
Opinion: I laughed when I read the last question/statement. Though Taylor is married with kids, he does, and always has had a bit of a feminine vibe about him, and he's an interesting dresser, which doesn't help. But this is the first time anyone in the band has acknowledged anything of the sort. And, the album is actually slated for May 22 unless the band has changed it and not told anyone.

The band will play a series of preview shows on the East coast in early March for the U.S. release of their album, "The Walk." (I have it and it's incredible.)

Hanson On Deal Or No Deal Posted by Tiff on 11 Jan 2007
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I admit that this is a bit odd, and well, interesting. You guys know that I'm a big fan of Hanson, and that I post about them on here whenever I can.
Interestingly enough, for several weeks, rumors have been going around that the guys would be on NBC's show 'Deal or No Deal?' at first it was thought they might be performing. I love them, but I thought 'bad idea.' Then, it was thought that they'd be surprising a fan. Apparently that is exactly what is happening.
As a nearly ten year fan (yes I realize that's slightly odd to most people) I think their sudden television appearance is a little different. However, I embrace their inner dorkiness along with my own (and I'm full on dork....) so I think this has to be better than their past appearances on 'Buddy Faro,' 'Sabrina The Teenage Witch,' 'Melrose Place,' and a whole other list of things that probably shouldn't have happened. Haha, but they always make for good memories.
Anyway, this will be interesting to watch. The show airs January 24.
Hanson "Great Divide" For AIDS Charity Posted by Tiff on 28 Nov 2006
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remember Hanson? Yes, the three boys from Oklahoma who sang "MMMBop?" They've always been my guilty pleasure, but you might've noticed they're a little older now, and the lyrics have gone far beyond where they were in 1997.
Now Indie, Hanson have released their newest single, "Great Divide" exclusively on iTunes. The cool thing is, ALL profits for the single, and the t-shirt (see below) will go exclusively to benefit the Perinatal HIV Unit at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto, South Africa.
After a recent trip to South Africa, the band made the decision to help, and they'd enlisted the help of childrens' choirs in the country to sing back-up lyrics on the song, and the children sang, "Ngi Ne Themba" which means, "I find hope" in Zulu.
To listen to the song, see the video of their trip, and to buy it on iTunes, CLICK HERE.
Indie Band: Foreign Oren Posted by Tiff on 25 Oct 2006
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
...on the edge of something you know is gonna change you but you're told you're gonna have to wait if you feel like falling head over heels, then risk it all and I'll be right here I can't say what tomorrow holds But I know this is how it feels to let go....
Being the self-proclaimed music junkie that I am, I'm always, always seeking out new music to add to my iPod and fill my ears. Sometimes I find the music, other times, it finds me.
A Texas-based indie band known as Foreign Oren found me on myspace, and I checked them out, as any curious music adorer might do. I was immediately struck by their lyrics, and the hook in their songs. I have a serious habit of playing songs over and over for hours on end (you don't want to know how many times I've played Ryan Star's "Losing Your Memory," really, you don't,) and I knew that Finding Oren's song "Head Over Heels" would be no exception when I first heard it.
The band isn't about singing what's popular. They're about singing music that represents who they are, and they welcome everyone to join them, particularly those who aren't thrilled with being labeled. With catchy lyrics that evoke emotion based on life experience, and a rock/pop/alternative background, the songs come off as easy listening, and if "Head Over Heels" were on the radio right now, hands down, it would be a hit.
Check out their songs and get their EP on Finding Oren's Myspace. And more on their Official Site.
If you check them out, comment and let me know what you think.
Up & Coming: NeedToBreathe [Band Alert] Posted by Tiff on 22 Jun 2006
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Summer is always a great time for new music....I know I'm always looking for something to add onto my iPod playlist for my roadtrips.
Check out NeedToBreathe, yes, all one word, just like that. The rock band comes from South Carolina, and consists of brothers and guitarists] Bear and Bo Rinehart, bassist Seth Bolt, and drummer Joe Stillwell.
The band has released their debut label album, "Daylight," on Java/Atlantic Records.
Who they sound like: Edgier Lifehouse, a more rocking The Calling, a rock-infused Switchfoot.
Their first single, "You Are Here" can be heard on their myspace, and their album is in stores now.
Also, check out their tour schedule and journal, they might be coming to a city near you.
On The Web: http://www.myspace.com/needtobreathe http://www.needtobreathe.net/
My Opinion: Great roadtrip soundtrack music for summer.
