Lost 3.19: The Brig

I don't think I can handle SO much good TV in one week; first that awesome episode of Heroes and now another great episode of Lost. This week the flashbacks belonged to Locke, which picked up right where his last episode left off.

Late is better than never, right? This week on Lost we were treated to a Sun and Jin flashback episode (more Sun than anything else). They don't exactly have the most exciting story line but it's really interesting to see how things played out in their past.

Lost 3.16 - One Of Us
Posted by Kim on 12 Apr 2007

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where do I even start with this episode? Last night we saw the second Juliet centric episode of the season, which not only gave us more information about the Others but insight into her character. Honestly, I think Juliet has quickly become one of, if not the most well written and well developed characters on the show. I wish some of the main characters were as dimensional as she is!

The flashback sequences covered her first days on the island while in real time, we see her integrating with the survivors back at camp. Alright, let's talk about her flashbacks first. To tell the truth there was so much information and most of it went over my head (I really need to watch it again!) but here's what we learned:

Lost 3.14: Expose
Posted by Kim on 30 Mar 2007

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last night's episode was all about Nikki and Paolo and I L-O-V-E-D it! It wasn't ground breaking and it did absolutely nothing to move the overall plot forward, but it sure was an intriguing story story within the series.

So, most of us pretty much knew that Nikki and Paolo were getting the shaft since both of the actors were cast in other movies/tv shows, etc. I really wonder why no one seems to ever want to stay on the show, but that's another story. I knew how she'd die, but the ending was still pretty shocking.

Quick overview...Nikki and Paolo's first and only episode goes back to before they were on the island. Nikki is a guest star on a hit tv show in Australia, and she and Paolo team up to con an old TV producer out of his money. Is there anyone on the island who hasn't majorly broken the law? Their backstory goes back to the very beginning and we see old characters like Artz, Shannon and Boone. The diamonds the two stole were in a suitcase that fell out of the plane; Paolo finds them, but doesn't tell Nikki. Obviously this leads to trouble later.

Paolo initially hides the diamonds in the bathroom at the Pearl station (they find that and the plane before anyone else does) but decides to store them, uh, in his underwear later on. Why he did this really doesn't make any sense, but it does move the plot forward. In order to get the diamonds back Nikki throws a spider on to Paolo who's venom will paralyze anyone it bites. Now, she's not too bright either because Artz specifically told her that the spider would attract male spiders just like it....so the girl gets her diamonds, but she gets bit too.

The rest of the group thinks their both dead. Sawyer and Hurley think she says "power lines" or "paolo lies" (clever!) but it was really "paralyzed". Nikki's eyes open....but not in time for her to stop them from burying her and Paolo alive! This is probably the most disturbing and unsettling death on the island, which is funny since we didn't really get to know the characters very well.

Honestly, my recap doesn't do much justice to the episode. The non linear approach they took made the mystery play out nicely. I don't think we're going to be seeing either of them ever again. In fact, I'll put money on it. Sure it's unresolved, but Michael and Walt anyone? And I was glad that Sawyer did the right thing and threw the $8 million worth of diamonds into the grave. Those two deserved to be buried with the diamonds. Moral of the story, kids: this is what greed will do to you!

But let's not forget what Locke said "nothing stays buried on this island".

Lost 3.13: Man From Tallahasse
Posted by Kim on 22 Mar 2007

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After a looooong hiatus I'm finally back with my Lost recaps (better I go on hiatus than the show, right?). I think all of the last four episodes have been great; they're easily making up for the first few shows of the season. Last night it was all about Locke; I always look forward to his episodes more so than some of the others. He's an interesting guy and seems to have the most connection with the island. His episode really explored that connection, and we finally found out how he got into a wheelchair.

But first, let's talk about Kate and Saayid, who made it to the Others camp to save Jack, but were suprised when they found him playing football with the enemy.

This scene between Kate and Jack was great. He tells her that Ben promised to let him (and Juliet) go home the very next day, which is why he wasn't happy to see her. This scene was the first time where Jack and Kate seemed to have natural chemistry, instead of being forced together by the writers. Even has a hardcore "skate" shipper I quite liked this moment between them.

Okay, back to Locke, who takes Ben and his daughter hostage at gun point because he wants the submarine. But Ben knows Locke a lot better than Locke thinks. He knows that Locke wants to blow up the submarine, and not use it get off the island. In turn, Locke knows that Ben doesn't mind him blowing up the submarine because he doesn't want his people getting off the island. These two evil masterminds really work well together, don't they? Ben tells Locke that the "anamoly" wiped out their communication with the outside world; I think that's total bull.

And as for Locke blowing up that submarine....what a jerk. I mean, hello, no one is going to force you off the island, just hide in a cave if you don't want to go! Why make everyone else stay just because of you? Ridiculous....

Locke's flashback features his dad, once again. This time his father is marrying a woman to con her out of her money; Locke lets him know that the woman's son is on to him and the son ends up dead. When Locke confronts his dad and threatens to call his fiance, his dad pushes him out an the window.

Well, he wins the father of the year award. And surviving an 8 story fall without brain damage or anything sounds almost impossible.

Oh, but that wasn't even the best part of the episode. At the end Ben tells Locke about a box on the island that will give you anything you want (don't ask me to explain this, I think it's more of a metaphor than anything else). He takes Locke to a closet door and says "this is what we found inside". Lock opens the door, and inside the closet is.......

....his dad! Eh, well it sounds kinda stupid written down, but it was really trippy/weird/confusing on the show. Maybe it's a hallucination, like Jack's dad or Eko's brother? Chances are, next week they won't even touch on this storyline.

This wasn't some big reveal episode, but the dialogue and the writing was fantastic, espially the exchanges between Ben and Locke.

Next week Nikki an Paulo get their episode. Um, why? They're both leaving the show at the end of the season! The trailer also sets it up to seem like someone will die (is that really necessarry??) and Sun finds out what Sawyer did to her last season and gives him a firm slap across the face. We're also supposed to get a big reveal, but you know how it goes on Lost; one question always opens up five more, so nothing is EVER answered.

Not that I'm complaining, of course.

Look for a lot of the old castmates in this episode too.

Dominic Monaghan Likes Dressing Up
Posted by Tiff on 18 Feb 2007

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I know a lot of you, including Kim are fans of 'Lost.' I thought this was amusing when I saw it.

Apparently, 'Lost' actor Dominic Monaghan, who dates fellow actor Evangeline Lily likes to dress up...in women's clothing. In a recent UK interview, he admitted, "I wear make-up and I paint my nails. I wear high heels. This is all true. I like wearing skirts," Dominic said. "I should probably be gay but I like women too much. I am kind of metrosexual in the sense that, if I do get lost, I do ask for directions. I pull over to gas stations and ask. So I don't know. I guess guys have a lot of pride."

Personally, it's nice to hear a guy who will stop and ask for directions if he's lost. It's also cool that he's secure enough with himself to admit this stuff. I can handle eyeliner on a guy, some guys make it look good. Nail polish, I can deal with too, it's very "rocker" in a sense. I'm not sure about the heels and skirts though, I think I'd have to draw my line there.

I don't know much about him or Evangeline, but she really doesn't seem like she'd be into "rocker" type guys. Of course, I could be wrong.

Lost Sets A New Record
Posted by Kim on 16 Feb 2007

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

But it's not a positive one.

Wednesday night's episode was the lowest rated episode of Lost EVER, with 12.5 million viewers (down from 14 million last week). And it's really a shame because many fans of the show are hailing it as the best episode in such a long time. It's not a huge shock with the show going downhill (ratings wise at least) anyways, coupled with the time slot being pushed back to 10pm.

As I mentioned before, last nights episode was a good one. Totally original and innovative, with no mention of The Others, and air time for the rest of the castaways....all good things. The entire episode, save about 10 minutes or so at the beginning and end, was Desmond's flashback. Desmond is quickly becoming one of the most intriguing characters on the island, mainly because his story has one of the biggest links to the island itself.

We finally find out what happens to Desmond after the hatch blows up....he goes back in time. Or does he? He wakes up on the floor, covered in red paint, and his memory keeps flashing back to the hatch. Random things around him remind him of the island, and he even knows what's going to happen. There's even a creepy old lady who won't let him buy a ring for his girlfriend because he's SUPPOSED to break her heart, enter her fathers sailing race and end up on the island. She says if he doesn't do that, everyone will die.

So did he go back in time or was it all just a dream? I don't know, but I think this episode gave us some really important insight into the mystery of the island. The whole concept of fate definitely ties in with the whole "we were all here for a reason" thing that was brought up a lot in the first season. And now there's something about the storyline now that is sorta reminding me of the Matrix in an odd way (not just the old lady who was sort of like the oracle).....like a lot of things are falling into place like as they "should", with one person at the center (possibly Desmond) and at the end it will all loop back and start over. I really wish I could explain it better....

The whole deal about fate is brought up in this episode. Early on Desmond saves Claire from drowning. All along I was thinking "oh, but if he can only see the future, shouldn't he have known that in advance?" in other words, I just sat there thinking I was smart for finding a plot hole.....WRONG. Yeah, the writers were one step ahead of me. It turns out that Desmand was trying to save Charlie from getting struck by lightening, and trying to save him from drowning trying to save Claire.

"No matter what I do, Brother...you're going to die."

Uh oh. Charlie really isn't an important character but he has a BIG fanbase. We'll see if they actually have the guts to give him the axe!

Next week we'll see Jack get down and dirty with Bai Ling in his flashback episode. Even though it probably will be centered around The Others, I think it's gonna be good.

Lost 3.7: Not In Portland
Posted by Kim on 08 Feb 2007

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After three (or was it four?) months, Lost is FINALLY back on the air. Honestly, I started to forget about this show...especially with Heroes, 24, and AI, and that's not a good sign. The show debuted at a new time slot, 10pm, which wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

Even after their dismal 6 episode run at the end of 2006 I didn't have low expectations for this episode. I expected it (and every episode afterwards) to be of usual "Lost quality", and guess what? It was. No bombshells in this episode, but it sure was intriguing.

The show starts out with a flashback from Juliet.....(keep reading)
