‘Scandal’ actress Kerry Washington recently welcomed a daughter and she has revealed that during her pregnancy she had to adapt her character Olivia Pope’s usually chic and smart looks in order to hide her growing bump as she continued to work. Teaming up with the show’s costume designer Lyn Paolo, the duo redesigned many items because they couldn’t find any maternity clothing that would suit the character:
”It was really fun for Lyn and I, because there didn’t really exist a line out there . . . that was able to meet our needs in terms of the elevated level of fashion of Olivia Pope. So we wound up inventing our own maternity wear and changing beautiful top-of-the-line clothes into maternity clothes.”
Kerry and Lyn also work together on a ‘Scandal’ inspired clothing collection in collaboration with The Limited, and Kerry has commented that she really loved designing items inspired by her character’s high-end tastes because it gives those who can’t afford such luxurious labels a chance to get the same look on a budget. She also enjoyed the whole design process down to the very small details of each garment:
”People who love the look of the show can now step into this world in a way that is affordable and accessible because not everybody can afford to have the clothes they see on the show. It’s been really fun to have a voice at every stage of the production from picking buttons, choosing fabrics and weighing in on hair and makeup people.”
