American Idol Top 10: Birth Year

Posted by Kim on March 26th, 2008 filed in American Idol, TV

Tonight the contestants sang songs from their year of birth. They couldn’t squeeze another week out of the Beatles, eh? No Ringo night? Wings, maybe?

Ramiele - Alone by Heart

Like I said, I knew she’d pick that song. Her strength is the tone of her voice, and NOT the power; that song takes power. You could hear it when she hit those glory notes towards the end; she was basically screaming them. Ew. And to compare herself to Carly and Carrie, heck even Gina, was not smart at all.

Jason - Fragile by Sting
I love this song and I always wanted someone to do it on idol. I kind of enjoyed parts of it but he didn’t do it any justice. It wasn’t such a great song choice, ultimately, because that song just doesn’t go any where. Simon had a good point; that’s fine in the background at a Starbucks while others are chatting but not on the idol stage.

I disagree with Simon though when he says he could potentially win. And I don’t think he’ll get any better.

Syesha - If I Were Your Woman by ??
SING. IT. GIRL. I mean, really, she just stood there and sang the song; no bells, no whistles, and it worked. I’m not ga-ga over this like I was over her performance last week, but boy has she stepped it up recently!

Chikezie - If Only For One Night by Luther Vandross
Uh, what was so bad about that? I understand what Randy was saying I guess, that it was too much of a throwback, but I thought he sounded great and he worked the stage and the audience well. Chikezie was starting to get this reputation of the “only interesting contestant left” because for the past two weeks he’s been doing something unexpected. I guess he’s just got to learn how to add his flair to ballads.

Brooke -I’ll Be Watching You by Sting
Eh. Just like her version of “Let It Be” did nothing for me, this did even less. It wasn’t bad, just boring, nothing special and I didn’t care for the arrangement. It’s also sort of laughable for them to praise her for stopping and starting again (which she also did in Hollywood). Randy called it professional….hmm, no I think a professional would come prepared. That was the opposite if you ask me.

Michael - We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions by Queen

PRAISE THE LORD. MICHAEL IS BACK.

Oh boy, you guys don’t know how relieved/ecstatic I am after watching this. I really did not want him to sing this song; it’s a tough one to pull off and I’ve seen it done on other shows and it was always a trainwreck. But this proves just how strong of a voice he has that he was able to pull it off. Honestly, I don’t think any of the other contestants could’ve done that without getting drowned out by the band.

Carly - Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler
Ditto what Randy said. It’s sad that we have to pick on this because she sang the HECK out of it and it wasn’t bad, but something just DID NOT WORK. Yikes! I picked this song out for her too, so I don’t know what the problem was. I think there was too much “rock” in the arrangement (like Randy said) and I hated the run at the end.

David A. - Your Voice by David Foster
Okay, his daddy must be choosing these songs for him (and I swear I wrote this right before Simon mentioned it). Love me some lil’ David, but that was not good. Annoying song, plus he was SO introverted all the way through. His eyes were closed and he didn’t connect with the audience at all. I didn’t think he even sounded good; it kinda reminded me of his performance top 12 week. He needs to like, emancipate himself or something.

Kristy - God Bless The USA by Lee Greenwood
Wow, this ho is SMART. That was the most desperate attempt for votes I’ve EVER seen on American Idol. The phone lines in the south probably broke down after this. Well, Simon was right, that was her best vocal performance on the show by far. I thought she did a good job up until that key change and then it got a bit awkward. But it was good….for her.

But I still HATE that song with a fiery PASSION.

David - Billie Jean by Chris Cornell
Well now we have an excuse for that awful combover. And what a surprise, yet ANOTHER cover from him; at least they credited the original artist this time. That actually sounded MILES better than the Chris Cornell version. But how can you call someone the “most original” when they can’t even come up with their own arrangements? Um, hello BLAKE?!?!?

But yes, he will fly through with flying colors and WIN this thing. His fans have absolutely nothing to worry about. Ever. Nothing at all.

  3. Syesha
  4. Carly
