American Idol 7 Top 8 Girls

Posted by Tiff on March 6th, 2008 filed in American Idol, TV

Continuing with 80’s week, the remaining eight girls took the stage tonight on ‘American Idol’ season 7. Like Simon said, NO ONE is safe tonight. I mean, these are the girls. We only pretend to care about them.

Tiff: First tonight was Asia’h Epperson with “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.” I liked the performance, and her voice, despite doing Whitney Houston songs on this show being questionable. I didn’t think it was amazing, but it was alright.

Kim: HIDEOUS OUTFIT! Oh my gosh, I haven’t seen anyone wear anything so ugly since season 1! (and there were some ugly clothes back then) We know her voice isn’t bad, and she’s not a shy performer, but I thought the whole thing was annoying and generic.

*points* DANCE!

Tiff: Second came Kady Malloy with “Who Wants to Live Forever.” I really thought she did the best with this performance as she has since she’s been on the show. But, considering her past performances, I think she may be in trouble.

Kim: Kind of a surprising song choice on her part, but I don’t think it was exactly the right one. She pulled it off well enough, but besides the opening it reminded me too much of Katharine McPhee’s version. I don’t know, I’ve been sort of rooting for her but I think tonight just proved that she doesn’t have anything more than a pretty voice.

Tiff: Amanda Overmyer chose “Hate Myself For Loving You.” She did a really good job tonight. And, I thought she was much prettier with less make-up. Simon even said she was “Fantastic,” and that it was one of his favorite girl performances of this stage in the competition. In fact, he ended up saying she was the best of the night.

Kim: Well this was the best of her performances, but I still don’t like the way her voice sounds (and raspy voices don’t necessarily bother me). If you watched her face, she looked sort of unfocused and preoccupied through most of it, and that really threw me off. It was good, but far from great.

Tiff: Carly Smithson sang “I Drove All Night.” I thought her vocal was good, and I do think she does tend to stand out from other girls on the show. I agree with Simon though, it wasn’t the best song choice for her voice, but she did good with it.

Kim: I actually think she’ been very smart with choosing songs this week and last week.  Because she’s chosen songs that totally show off her vocal abilities and allow her to do glory notes and all of that, but they’re also FUN songs, and she was entertaining.  This girl is growing on me a lot!  But BOY does she need the help of a stylist; those mom jeans have GOT to go.

Tiff: Kristy Lee Cook chose Journey’s “Faithfully.” This is perhaps, the first time I’ve ever heard a country rendition of this song. I really didn’t like the performance, and I thought the end was awful, the notes were a mess. Like Simon said, she’s forgettable really. He also said she’d be lucky to place 10th at best.

Kim: I didn’t think it was THAT bad. It works as a country song, and Kristy’s voice sounded sort of nice in some places.  But her glory notes were all over the place!  If she makes it to 10th place, God help us all!

Tiff: Ramiele Malubay sang “Against All Odds.” This song is a good song, but it should be banned from the ‘Idol’ song book, it’s been done to death. I like her voice though, and she’s a pretty girl. I think she should have chosen a different song.

Kim: I’m pretty sure “Against All Odds” has now either tied or surpassed “I Have Nothing” as the most sung song on AI.  I agree with Simon’s critique of this 100%.  It wasn’t bad considering she has the voice for it, but at the same time it was sort of “so what?” If that was a top 12 worthy performance, that pretty much shows how bad the girls are this year.

And personality wise, Ramiele has officially morphed into Danny. Sheesh, even one of him is just TMTH.

Tiff: Brooke White took a risk and did an acoustic, mellow take on “Love Is A Battlefield.” I liked it, and even Simon liked it too. I don’t think she could have made a full on rock version work, and she knew that.

Kim: Woah, the judges are just in their own little world tonight.  Alrighty then.  Once again, Simon was absolutely right and Paula was wrong.  I love that she kept the whole thing acoustic and didn’t build; how predictable would that have been?  It was also a huge risk for her; vocally, she just couldn’t hide.

Tiff: Syesha Mercado closed the show with “Saving All My Love For You.” She’s a pretty girl with a pretty voice, but I didn’t really like the song choice.

Kim: Yeah, anyone who picks Whitney should be automatically eliminated. With that said, Syesha pulled it off pretty well vocally, and I liked some of her high notes. Overall it was pretty unremarkable.

Tiff’s Ranking Best to Worst

01. Amanda Overmyer
02. Carly Smithson
03. Brooke White
04. Syesha Mercado
05. Ramiele Malubay
06. Asia’h Epperson
07. Kady Malloy
08. Kristy Lee Cook

Who Should Go: Kady Malloy and Kristy Lee Cook
Who Will Likely Go: Kady Malloy and Asia’h Epperson or Ramiele Malubay

Kim’s Rank

1. Brooke
2. Carly
3. Amanda
4. Syesha
5. Kady
6. Ramiele
7. Asia’h
8. Kristy

Who Should Go: Asia’h and Kristy Lee Cook
Who Will Likely Go: Kady Malloy and Asia’h

Okay, so the whole semi round goes to the guys.  The girls were slightly less boring this week but once again, there were only one or two entertaining performances.

Amanda pulled herself out of the gutter and Kristy seems to have a fanbase, so the likelihood of Kady cheating death again is slim to none.  And maybe I’m slightly biased sayng  Asia’h should go, but I think it’s going to be between her and Ramiele fighting for that last spot.  Ramiele most likely has the bigger fan base, so I would be highly surprised if Asia’h made it through tomorrow.

Tomorrow is the big day! We find out the top 12.  There’s bound to be a couple shockers (and hopefully only from the girls!).

I wonder if the stylists are insane or is it possible that the girls were trying to dress 80’s? I don’t know but I found the bad clothes very, very distracting.
I thought Brooke had a cool take on Love is a Battlefield….. but other than that, I find all of the girls a bit dull. I mean I would not be disappointed if any of them left the competition. However, I do feel strongly that Kristy Lee Cook should GO. I’m sooooo done with her.

^SPOILERISH but I hear Kristy is staying tonight. And so are a couple others who should be going, but we’ll see what happens. I think most people are underwhelmed by the girls.

And the clothes made me cringe too, lol.
