American Idol 7 Contestant Spoilers

Is this the year of the singer/songwriter? Or a second chance for those who didn’t have much luck with their first record deal? Looks like a combination of both.

Josiah Leming, 18, Ft. Worth
Sound: Alternative/Indie
He might not have the greatest voice, but I admire this kid’s songwriting skills and he can PLAY that keyboard. Besides that his influences range from Radiohead to U2, DC Talk, ColdPlay and Queen……can’t go too wrong with that. It will be interesting to see how things pan out for him; look out for him to play keyboard in his audition (if they air it, of course) and sing “Grace Kelley” by Mika. I hear the judges like him a lot.

Carly Hennessy, 26, Ireland
Sound: Pop Rock???
Remember a couple of seasons ago when there was a ton of pre season buzz about an irish girl who could rival Kelly Clarkson? Only hardcore fans of the show would remember, probably, but she’s back after not making it the first time because of problems with her citizenship. Apparently she’s quite well known in her home country and had a major label deal here in the states when she was a teen….that label spent $2m on her album and it only sold a couple hundred copies. Ouch. And apparently she has ties to Idol going back a few years, interestingly enough.

Yes, the freakishly tattooed man is her husband. And you can watch the video for her single about oral sex below.

David Archeleta, 16, Utah
Sound: Crooner?
Randy mentioned a 16 year old boy who’s doing well in one of his interviews, and I’m thinking it’s him. This kid won Star Search when he was about 12 years old, and he was my fave! He had so much soul, especially for a little boy from Utah. You can check out one of his performances from the show below:

Cardin McKinney, 20, Nashville
Sound: Pop/Soul
Think Katharine McPhee with a bit more depth. This girl has a pretty good voice; she has kind of a smokey tone to her voice that I didn’t really expect. She already has a pretty big online following. And apparently she’s mormon so dont expect to see her wearing any tank tops!

Sound: Diva
She was on that flop of a talent show that aired on ABC called The One. All the inside sources say she’ll fly through to the top 24 and possibly the top 12.

Michael Johns, Australia
Sound: Rock
Strong vocals here, he has a good voice for rock music.

Lorena, 27, Florida
Sound: Probably pop
She was a member of MSM, which was some weird hybrid of the Miami Sound Machine and a cheesy girl latin pop group. They had a major label deal and there are tons of pictures of them on image wires and their videos are on youtube. In other words, she’s not any amateur, but who is nowadays? Here’s one of MSM’s performances on a Navy ship that I unfortunately remember all too clearly:

Well we’ve never had a jazz singer before. His stuff and his voice remind me of crooners like Michael Buble, and I never like those types on AI.
