Project Runway 4: The Top 13
Posted by Kim on November 29th, 2007 filed in TV, project runway season 4Last night on Project Runway the designers were given a challenge that has never been done on the show. They had to create menswear for ex football player and Today Show host Tiki Barber. So this guy wants something fairly conservative, done in dark colors that can be worn on camera…..can we say BORING? Yes, and I think the winning outfit pretty much shows it.

THIS is the winning creation (done by Jack) on a show about DESIGN. Gotta love it. I understand that it was ultimately the guest judges’ choice but seriously he could’ve picked this up at JC Penney and called it a day. And all those lines going every which way are sort of nauseating.
Most of what the designers made looked like utter crap, which is actually understandable because menswear is hard to make. Trust me, I flunked at least one course of patternmaking. At least a couple of the designers took risks like…

Jillian, although this would probably look really stupid on TV from the waist up. All it needs is some chest hair, a gold chain and a really greasy comeover.

And Christian. There’s something I don’t like about the jacket but the shirt underneath had a sideways zipper. The whole thing was unique and appropriate.

My favorite look was what Victorya did. I was surprised more of them didn’t use a mandarin collar on their jackets.

And this look, care of Chris, cracked me up because it looks like something Neo would’ve worn in The Matrix. It’s not exactly the same without the shades.

Kit and Kevin came close to winning the challenge. I think they should’ve gone with what Kevin did.
And of course, there has to be losers…

Oh boy, I loled SO hard when this came down the runway! I don’t think we’ve ever seen a designer screw up a piece as Sweet P did with her collar. Yikes. And the tie really did not help. How she made it through to the next round I have no idea but she really should be on her knees thanking the Lord.

Eventually it came down to Carmen and Rickey (his suit was held together by pins), with Carmen going home. Actually with the jacket closed it was one of the better outfits (minus the crotch). And just think, it’s hot under those lights so who wants a sweater AND a scarf under that jacket? No, really, the whole bottom 3 should’ve been sent home.
So yeah, total trainwreck of a challenge. And next week might not be much better! Click the link if you want to see spoilers.
Apparently, next week will be yet another menswear challenge with the designers creating a look for Bon Jovi.

I really liked the vest-trouser combo with the purple shirt. And I cracked up at sweet-p’s shirt from hell also!
It seemed like all the designers were way out of their element on this challenge. You’d think menswear would be easier than women’s. How hard is it to make a button down shirt, pants and a jacket?

^Well as I mentioned, it’s actually very hard. I majored in Fashion, and we took patternmaking and draping classes and the pattern for a basic button down shirt shirt is a lot more complicated than a basic dress. Not to mention all the tailoring in menswear. It does seem like it would be easier though.
