Britney Spears Blackout Review

“I’m Miss American Dream since I was seventeen….”
Given the interesting, tumultuous, and somewhat tragic year [at least in terms of a career] that Britney Spears has had, it’s safe to say ‘Blackout’ has been, perhaps, the most anticipated album of 2007. Some people remain die-hard fans in spite of her choices, and others of us are just curious.
‘Blackout’ overall has a very dance-friendly vibe. In ‘Piece of Me’ and ‘Freakshow’ Britney seems to mock the media, the naysayers, and her circumstances. ‘Gimme More’ will probably forever remind me of the VMA performance, but dare I say I love the opening of “It’s Britney, bitch?” I admit it, I do. ‘Radar’ is reminiscent of the Eurythmics mixed with a bit of a forties sound. ‘Break the Ice’ reminds me of something you would hear while in a club dancing, flashing lights and strobes. In ‘Get Naked, (I Got a Plan)’ the background vocals distract me more than actually paying attention to what Britney sings. ‘Toy Soldier’ is the only song on the album that I absolutely despise. I just can’t make myself like it. ‘Hot As Ice’ is a song that’s grown on me. ‘Ooh, Ooh Baby’ has a bit of a forties sound as well, with a rolling vocal, if the forties had modern dance tracks, that is. ‘Perfect Lover’ is not one of my favorite songs on the album, but I don’t hate it either. The vocals are very light, and I almost think it would have been better if she had sung out a little more. And, the album closes with ‘Why Should I Be Sad,’ which has a bit of an R&B/Dance feel, and has been said to be a jab at Britney’s marriage to Kevin Federline.
Admittedly, when listening to ‘Blackout,’ Britney’s troubles were the furtherest thing from my mind. It’s actually a decent dance album. I wouldn’t be surprised if she ends up at the top of the charts again. After all, she’s not exactly that sweet, innocent little girl from Louisiana anymore, and one listen to her lyrics confirms that. But, that being said, I don’t think her hardcore fans will be disappointed.
Download this: ‘Radar.’
Rating: Three and a half of five stars.

I guess what bugs me about albums like this is that it’s not like Britney sat down and programmed these tunes into the computer herself (which is what they are),and yet she’ll get credit for it. To each their own, but I like my music to have a little soul behind it. Something that sounds like it came preloaded as a backbeat on a Casio keyboard isn’t really my thing. But then again, I listened to Bo’s album and I really liked it. Hell, at least me MADE it.
Keep up the good work girls…love the site!

Oh yeah Kim, YSIing it now. Sorry, I’d forgotten.
“Toy Soldier” is the one I loathe. LOL.
Thanks Kat.

I heard tracks from this song a little bit ago… not too bad. Surprising from such a drugged up mess.

Kat - I think Tiff and I for the most part agree w/ you, but we still like our “fun” music too. Just about ANY artist on a label out there has someone else do something on their record. I doubt Bo single handedly wrote and produced and mixed etc. etc. every track on his CD.
Tiff - It’s okay I ended up downloading it, lol. It’s a good song!
Hi5 - I know, right?

Kim/Tiff–Agree that Bo probably didn’t produce every single track, but I guess the difference is that he sounds to me like he belongs in that album. With Britney, it could be anyone breathily singing to technoporn. Oh well.
Don’t get me wrong; I love “fun” music, too. But I turned off my radio when this overproduced electronica became all the rage. It’s just not my thing.

Um, FAIL. Read the lyrics. Anyone who follows Britney knows that those songs illustrate EXACTLY what she’s going though.

i was really scared that this album will suck, and that it’d just be a disastrous end to her career.

I think it’s a super fun CD! I love the dancey music.. I listen to music to have fun and be happy, not think about who wrote and produced it, although it would be nice to think that she wrote some of them herself, but oh well! I love the way Toy Soldier takes stabs at KFed! I was never a fan of him! Annnd I love how Peice of Me depicts her life pretty well… “Miss American Dream since I was seventeen..” My favorites though are Oooh Oooh Baby and Hot As Ice cuz they’re so much fun!! I’ve had it since it came out and I can’t stop listening to it.. it’s too damn catchy!
