Why Did I Get Married? Review

What was the last movie I saw? I can’t really remember, it’s been quite a while!  This morning I got a chance to get to the theaters to see Why Did I Get Married?, the latest flick from Tyler Perry.  I watched two of his other films, “Daddy’s Little Girls” and “Dairy of a Mad Black Woman” and liked them;  that was my main reason for going to see this one, because the trailers honestly didn’t do it justice.

The movie is narrated by Janet Jackson’s character, an author who wrote a book (same name as the title) about a yearly couples retreat she does with eight of her friends.  I wasn’t really wild about watching her on screen for two hours, but her character wasn’t really even important to the plot.  She and her husband had a child pass away.  Another couple, the wife works constantly and the husband wants another child.  The third couple the husband constantly makes fun of his wifes weight, AND he brings along a young, attractive friend on the trip (guess where that goes!).  And the fourth couple has baby mama drama, not to mention that the wife is constantly nagging on her husband.

Basically the movie is about these couples working on their marriages.   Part of the movie is absolutely hilarious….I mean really funny.   But there are also important messages to it, as well as heartbreaking and heart warming scenes. If you ask me Tasha Smith steals the show as the smart mouthed comic relief of the movie; she played a similar role in “Daddy’s Little Girls” but was more likeable in this one.  Singer Jill Scott is in the movie too and she gives a really good emotional performance.  And I have to wonder, why don’t we see more of Sharon Leal?  I know she had a small part in Dreamgirls; the girl is really pretty and a great actress too.

I would say “Why Did I Get Married?” is a bit of a mixture of the other two Tyler Perry movies I mentioned.  The only criticism I can give is that some parts of the plot were really predictable; the characters were doing everything the people in the theater were telling them to do!  But this movie is definitely entertaining, and suited for the whole family.

 7/10

Trailers Attatched: Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins (Martin Lawrence? I’ll pass.), The Mist (another Steven King…looks like The Fog), I Am Legend (and I can’t wait) and The Eye (I’ll talk about this later).

I highly recommend this movie. This is the best movie I’ve sennd in quite a while. The only scene in the movie that I didn’t care for was the end, which really didn’t fit.
